So, do the pre-sales hit all at once when the book becomes "available"? Could that be enough to make it #1?

The NYT list is compiled based on sales at a handful of "secret" bookstores. Amazon.com and BandN.com are most likely not on the list.

Hopefully, I think they have to ship in order to count.

Here's what the Times has at the bottom of their list.

Rankings reflect sales, for the week ending August 7, at almost 4,000 bookstores plus wholesalers serving 50,000 other retailers (gift shops, department stores, newsstands, supermarkets), statistically weighted to represent all such outlets nationwide.
