I have been saying for awhile that Kerry in not acting as a rational person running for the highest office in the land. I do not need to list everything he has done wrong, we all know them, but the questin remains, why?
I am thinking he is a placeholder for you know who (the junior Senator from New York).
His job was to pull President Bush into the mud with him, to damage the President, and to cause the American people turn from supporing him (the President).
If he was able to hurt the President enough, he was to drop out of the race and having you know who, take offer.
Hillary wants to be President. There is one big obstacle to those goals, Hillary could not withstand a long primary, followed by a real campaign. Her only hope is to have as short of a campaign as possible. This requires someone to hold her place, and weaken the President.
Keeping this in mind, Kerry's flip flops, lies, evasions, and down right nutty behavior becomes clearer. He is just having fun.
Something has gone wrong with thier plans. President Bush is not playing their game. He is not allowing himself to be baited He has remained on the high road, and calmly taken care of business.

You're assuming that Kerry thinks more of the democrat party than he does of himself. Kerry ONLY thinks of himself. There was no way in the world that he would have "stepped down" from the nomination when he had it all sewn up. Not a chance.

I have to admit it, I would love to see them try and substitute Hilary at this juncture. They would be laughed right off the planet. But I personally believe Hilary always meant to save herself for 2008 (though she kept her options open till the last minute). Kerry does not need her machinations to destroy himself and all she needs to do for now is play the wise, generous leader of the loyal opposition. Bill's great mission from now till the end of his days is to cement his legacy as revered elder statesman (while living the rock star lifestyle offstage, is it not amazing how nothing, absolutely nothing is printed about his behind-the-scenes adventures?); give him thirty years and he'll pull it off.
