The national press used the aftermath to clobber President Bush (41) and make him look out of touch.

Bush Sr. deserved the criticism.

It was a week before the military came to help. Inexcusable when in foreign disasters we can be on the ground in days.

because they delayed filing the FEMA claim - it was all orchestrated by the Dems, they were on CNN 5 minutes after Andrew hit screaming that there was no federal assistance - how could there have been?

I lost everything in Andrew. It was a war zone and we didn't hear a peep from the state or the Feds for days. It was a week before we saw choppers bringing in supplies.

It was an awful mess. It went far beyond FEMA claims. It was a matter of getting medical attention and food to areas with no access in or out.

It looks like lessons were learned from the Andrew debacle.

I don't see how this "crushes GDP growth" - if anything, a huge surge of building materials and supplies will now be needed for this area. and the tourists, can just go to Orlando instead.

yes, you are right. the local apparatus did nothing, except to have their commisioners go onto TV and blame Bush 41 and the Feds for doing nothing.

I remember it clearly, as I am always glued to hurricane coverage, they were coming onto CNN screaming that there was no water - the local government apparatus was unequipped to move bottled water into the area? they needed the federal government to do it?

Actually, State Farm was the best part of the entire Andrew experience. They were there with the money when we needed it and major claims were expidited.

They had so many six figure claims their heads were spinning.

well, at least these will be wind damage claims, as it appears at least that most people do not have flood damage.

Only the military was capable of dealing with the devestation involved. Really, it was that bad.

Perhaps, but it is up to the governor to make the request. In general I agree. Bush (41) seemed tired in 1992. After the complete collapse of the Soviet Union, he seemed uninterested in persuing new conservative ideas on domestic issues or even getting out of the way of cabinet members like Jack Kemp who were.
