Maureen Dowd: Laura Bush a GOP 'Attack Dog'
NewsMax.com ^ | 8/14/04 | Carl Limbacher

Posted on 08/14/2004 8:59:54 AM PDT by kattracks

First lady Laura Bush is wildly popular with the American people, but not with New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, who called her a GOP "attack dog" this week for speaking out on stem cell research.

"She's been dragged out to be a Republican attack dog on the most contentious issue, stem cell research, defending her husband's, you know, refusal to use more [stem cell] lines," Dowd told CBS "Early Show" host Hannah Storm while promoting her new book "Bushworld." "I think it's a huge mistake," warned the top Timeswoman. "Laura is this fantastic, nice, Marian-the-librarian-type who was curled up with a cat on her lap reading Dostoevsky" and "they drag Laura on to the campaign trail because she had such high approval ratings."

Of course, Dowd failed to note that the first lady's "attack" on stem cell research amounted to warning that the new science wouldn't do much to cure Alzheimer's.

That's exactly what Mr. Stem Cell Research himself, Ron P. Reagan said last month.

"Alzheimer's is a disease, ironically, that probably won't be amenable to treatment through stem cell therapies," Reagan told MSBC's Chris Matthews.

Make that, "attack dog" Ron Reagan.

Let's extend embryo research to include early detection of liberal embryos... Then we can inform the mother, and give her the right to choose.

"Maureen Down is a low-life attack-dog.
And I know dogs like Dowd.
I poop on her."

Calling Laura Bush an :attack dog" will not play well among women and independents. It will also infuriate the President!

Hopefully this will backfire on Dowd, by dissing Laura as nothing more than an attack dog, Dowd comes off as the aggressor. And a nasty one at that.

The best word for Dowd, and one that comes immediately to mind, is one that ryhmes with witch, which, I guess, is also appropriate.

I saw Dowd on Booknotes (last weekend, I think). Whatever looks she once had have evaporated. Now she wears her miserable, bitter personality as a permanent feature of her face.

Someone should tell the blowhards, Laura has every interest in the treatment of Alzheimers. He father suffered from it, as did my grandmother.

No one has any right to throw out false hope for the sake of a vote.

But once again, if anyone on the right speaks their beiefs or presents facts we are labeled liars, vicious, dishonorable and dishonest.

I've always said liberals are either 1) Stupid, or 2) Mean. I think Ms. Dowd is both.

Laura Bush represents everything Maureen Dowd would like to have been! That's the only reason for her venom! Fancy, Laura Bush is sitting in the White House while Maureen Dowd is confined to a creepy hole in the creepy West 43rd Street desk space that the creepy The New York Times has assigned to her in that creepy area off creepy Broadway and near creepy 8th Avenue where the creeps of the world hangout every day!!!

Maureen's just jealous that no man has ever been devoted to her the way Dubya is to Laura. Mrs. Bush has every right to speak out on stem-cell research. Afterall, her father died of Alzheimers disease. If Ronald Reagan can speak out about it, so can she. At least she's never told anyone in the press to "Shove it!"

I caught that interview as well. She looked very sour and sad in her pitiful existance. It appeared that if she tried to smile or show some type of humor that she would explode.

From Oxblog:

IMMUTABLE LAWS OF DOWD

1. Ashcroft never deserves credit.

2. Offering constructive solutions to problems, instead of whining endlessly about them, is a sign of weakness.

3. The People Magazine principle: all political phenomena can be explained with reference solely to caricatures of the personalities involved ("Dubya" is stupid; "Poppy" is an aristocrat; Cheney is macho-man; etc.). Any reference to the common good or even to old-fashioned politicking is, like, so passe.

4. It is much better to be cute than coherent.

5. Maureen knows best. Her long years as a columnist (doing basically what your great-aunt Tillie does in the nursing home bull sessions, but getting paid for it) have given her deep insight into foreign relations, politics, welfare, the Constitution, and all other topics. To disagree with Maureen in any way is not only a sign of being wrong, it's a hallmark of pure evil...or at least membership in the NRA, which is pretty much the same thing.

6. It is usually possible and always desirable to name-drop and name-call in the same sentence.

7. The particulars of my consumer-driven, shamefully self-involved life reveal universal truths.

Explanation of the Dowd/Douglas connection: by Miss Marple- 2/11/03

Ms. Dowd was escorted around New York and DC for many months by one Michael Douglas of Hollywood fame and fortune. She got to go to all the best parties, was photographed for the tabloids, and was picking out a gown to wear at the Oscars. Of course, Michael had become interested in her during Clinton's impeachment, when she had written some very anti-Clinton columns. After a few weeks of the Michael treatment, she began to write anti-Starr, ant-Newt columns, ignoring Clinton.

Then Clinton was acquitted by the Senate. In an amazing coincidence, Michael Douglas dropped Ms. Dowd like a hot potato, and instead picked up a hot tomato, Catherin Zeta-Jones, who subsequently bore him a son and they were married.

Ms. Dowd cannot get over her tragic loss. Her columns are increasingly anti-Bush, in the hope of impressing her lost love, Michael.

In addition, we think she has a secret crush on the President and is trying to get him to pay attention to her. Ha!
