Calif Supreme Court's gay marriage ruling sparks anger, praise

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Wearing the same wedding gown and veil she wore when she married her partner six months ago at City Hall, Molly McKay stood on the steps of the state Supreme Court and wiped tears from her eyes. About a dozen gay and lesbian couples huddling around the McKay, a gay rights advocate, also began to hug and cry, especially when she read that the court Thursday had nullified the 3,995 same-sex marriages sanctioned by San Francisco during its brazen effort to change the national debate on gay marriage.

"I'm really upset because I feel like I should have the same protections other people have," said Robert Dekoch, who married Patrick Connors, his partner of five years, on Feb. 15.

"This country, the land of the free, doesn't recognize us," said Belinda Ryan, holding a handpainted sign with her partner, Wendy Daw, reading "United by love, divided by law."

Gay marriage opponents praised the court's decision, and said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom was responsible for the anger, frustration and disappointment felt by the gay couples.

"The state Supreme Court has sent a message to say this is not the way you change the legal system, by defying the rule of law," said Jordan Lorence, an attorney for Alliance Defense Fund, one of the groups that filed an emergency petition to stop the marriages.

"I would acknowledge there was a lot of emotion expressed here last February and March - lots of elation," Lorence said. "I think it was cruel for the mayor to represent that these licenses were anything but of dubious validity."

State Attorney General Bill Lockyer, who argued that Newsom's action would lead to legal anarchy, said the decision was a victory for the rule of law.

No one mentions the fact that Gavin Newsome is now liable to 4,000 felony counts of issuing false documents.

This is significant, because the first thing these sexual perverts probably did was use their fake marriage certificates to file for benefits, etc.

Gee, they ARE just like us-I did the same thing with my hunting buddies when the Brady Bill was passed!

It's sad, but there's no way this guy will pay a price for breaking the law.

I doubt any DA will seek charges against him.

Though I agree with the courts ruling, Mr Lorence is slightly wrong. Depending on the point of view and whether the cause is popular enough, breaking the law is pivotal to changing govt, society, laws.

Unfortunately for the gays, their cause is not popular and their little scam backfired and is heating the election year up into a full force GOP "get out the vote".

Way to go morons.

State Attorney General Bill Lockyer, who argued that Newsom's action would lead to legal anarchy, said the decision was a victory for the rule of law.

"If people want to change those laws, there are appropriate ways to do that," Lockyer said. "I don't think it's a secret that I'm not an opponent of gay marriage, but I have a legal duty to support the law."

Now, keep in mind that this AG is one of the dopes that was recently running around the country suing companies that generate electricity because they “contribute to global warming.”

But his statements above represent the extent of his interest in pursuing this.

"... she read that the court Thursday had nullified the 3,995 same-sex marriages sanctioned by San Francisco ..."

Yesterday, articles gave the exact number as "4,037" - I know because I cherished reading of every single one!
So now what gives? ... or is this merely yet another example of the liberal media's obvious and habitual weakness with numbers - beyond those 3 (count 'em - 3!!!) seemingly self-awarded Purple Hearts of course.

The Licenses of Dubious Validity would be a great name for a rock group.

"If people want to change those laws, there are appropriate ways to do that,"

The issue is that the majority of the Left is not interested in representative government in the least. They want power and will take it in whatever ways they can.

I am pleasantly surprised to see Lockyer make a statement like this. I guess much like in even MA, gay marriage is not a good issue for an elected official to campaign on statewide in CA.

How could you possibly have thought otherwise!!! It was very very obvious even to the casual observer that they were of "dubious validity", at best. I thought that most of these people were out to make a point, but apparently some of them are just plain ignorant.

As I've said since this SF bidness began, this is the perfect opportunity for some shyster lawyers to shill the 'victims' and sue SF, Newsom and all SF officials who participated in these marriages.

Officials are not indemnified personally by the City if they knowingly engage in illegal activity in the performance of their duties. I can't believe that even the leftist rabble who run SF gov. could possibly believe that these marriages were lawful.

"Sniff...Wallace and I really believed we were married. And now we find out that we aren't. Our lives have been ruined and we have become laughing stocks. I don't know if I can bear the pain. Waaaa!"

C'mon lawyers! Do your stuff!
