Andrew had 26 deaths. Fran had 37 and Floyd had 57.

Some of the Floyd deaths were traffic accidents during the mandatory evacuations, and the victims would have been just fine if they'd stayed home, since the hurricane ended up not hitting where it was predicted to hit.

People were complaining about the officials overreacting and making too many people evacuate, remember?

Having lived in the Homestead area for over 25 years, I barely survived Hurricane Andrew at the very old, stucco home of friends inland. I was in an evacuation area. I lost my home.

I've never believed that 26 number figure. 3 or 4 people died in my development alone due to very shoddy .. criminally negligent .. construction, and with the hundreds and hundreds of undocumented aliens working in the farm fields there, living in shoddy farmland trailer communities .. I have always believed the number was in the hundreds. There were stories at that time of refrigerator trucks full of bodies. We'll never know.
