Actually it did - a very unusual occurance

In Florida
Hurricane Andrew made landfall near Homestead AFB at 5:05 am EDT on August 24, with a central pressure estimated to be 922 mb, and sustained winds of 145 mph, classifying it as a Category 4 hurricane. Upon making landfall, Andrew temporarily intensified, due increased convergence in the core. However, during its four-hour trek across the tip of Florida, Andrew weakened about one Saffir-Simpson category, but remained a potent storm.

Hurricane Andrew stayed strong as it swept over landfall because it was over the Everglades. Also, the feeder bands were still over the Gulf and the Atlantic. The feeder bands for this hurricane will remain over water also.
