CA: Did Secretary Shelley run a shell game?

If any California politician must be above reproach, it's the secretary of state, who runs state elections.

But Secretary of State Kevin Shelley, who has a reputation of clean politicking, has gotten himself into an ethical scandal.

"A San Francisco nonprofit group paid $108,000 from a state grant to two individuals and two companies who then made donations of nearly identical amounts to Kevin Shelley's successful 2002 campaign for California secretary of state," the San Francisco Chronicle, his home-town newspaper, reported on Sunday. "The money came from a $500,000 taxpayer-financed grant that Shelley himself arranged in 2000 when he was majority leader in the Assembly.

"The state awarded the grant to the San Francisco Neighbors Resource Center, a nonprofit organization founded to serve Asian immigrants by Julie Lee, a Shelley political ally who is also president of the city's Housing Authority commission."

Yesterday the Chronicle further reported that Ms. Lee "appears to have funneled an additional $50,000 into Shelley's political coffers through a real estate deal." This "appears to violate state law against concealing the true source of a campaign contribution."

In yesterday's Register, columnist Dan Walters wondered if the Legislature would probe the Shelley scandal as vigorously as it did that of former Insurance Commissioner Chuck Quackenbush, a Republican who in 2000 was forced to resign because he was accused of misallocating money from an earthquake fund to help advance his career.

No way he could be a Taxocrat, you think?

I mean the Governor is a Republican. Look for them to write something like his 35th cousin is a Republican on a local school board in Barnny Miss. Pop. 350. That way they link him to Rebplicans.

Or before he is indicted he will pull a McGreedy and come out of the closet, then it looks like a smear job on a homosexual.

Apropos of nothing, I think California should change its capital punishment from gas chamber to public hanging.
