LOS ANGELES -- President Bush yesterday defended his decision to wait five minutes before leaving a Florida classroom upon learning of the September 11 terrorist attacks, a move that was criticized last week by Sen. John Kerry.
"I think it's easy to second-guess," Mr. Bush said on CNN's "Larry King Live." "What's important is how I reacted when I realized America was under attack.
"It didn't take me long to figure out we were at war," he added. "It didn't take me long to develop a plan that we would go after al Qaeda. We went into action very quickly."
On the morning of September 11, Mr. Bush was in a second-grade classroom in Sarasota, Fla., listening to students read. After being told by White House Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card Jr. that a second jetliner had struck the World Trade Center, the president opted to let the children finish the lesson before excusing himself.
The move was criticized by liberal filmmaker Michael Moore, whose movie "Fahrenheit 9/11" erroneously accused the president of remaining seven minutes. Last week, Mr. Kerry echoed Mr. Moore's criticism.

Yeah, with Mooreon and Hanoi John F'n Kerry Heiz they would have immediately soiled their Depends.
Blessings, Bobo
He should just laugh the next time he is asked this question and say "taking your ques from Michael Moore? What did you want me to do, leap from my chair and then spend the next 7 minutes pacing at the back door to the school while I waited for the clearances to come through?"
What's the scoop? Was it seven minutes, or not?
It is a classic illustration of Leftist mentality that they would make hay over the look on Dubya's face when he was told of the 2nd airliner but not speculate about what Algore would have done if he were president at the time.
None of the mainstream media want to explore THAT hypothetical.
If President Bush were as big a liar a some candidates, this would be soooo simple: Simply say that Andrew Card whispered to him that there was no need to rush, as they were getting cars and aircraft ready to leave, blah, blah, blah. I'm sure Mr. Card would go along with that. But instead Mr. Bush simply tells the truth. I just don't get it. </sarcasm>
I think Bill Sammon is wrong here. The 9/11 Commission Report, for which I have a great deal of respect, is pretty certain President Bush sat for seven minutes before his first briefing.
Whether or not this is substantial...that's an entirely different question.
Bush was masterful on the Larry King Formaldehyde Hour. Masterful. The bit about how meetings with familes "should not be publicized" really was effective. He had fewer "umms" and "ahhhs" then I have seen since the 9/11 aftermath. He really seems to be finding his pace, and feeling confident about their attack-mode campaign. Perfect timing leading up to the Convention. And Laura was gorgeous as usual. Love those two.
This is why I like the guy...simple and effective and sums up the modern left to a T.
