CA: Fast end to S.J. probe blasted (More twists&turns-Did SJPD co-opt investigation, and why?)

San Jose police on Wednesday abruptly closed a weeklong criminal probe into alleged electronic eavesdropping in City Hall, angering the city auditor who believes his investigation into a botched technology contract may have been compromised.

Police began investigating after City Auditor Gerald Silva in late July detected ``electronic fingerprints'' of several key city officials on a document connected with his probe of collusion and favoritism in the award of the $8 million networking contract. Among those officials, sources say, was Chief Information Officer Wandzia Grycz, who has since resigned after helping steer the city's networking business to Cisco Systems.

But Davis said he has concluded that a software glitch made it appear Grycz had read the document when she had not -- an explanation Silva finds improbable.

``The police chief has an explanation that I don't understand, and I hope his department can come over and explain it to my department,'' Silva said. ``I don't think the investigation is complete.''

Scandal, politics

The dispute raises questions about how vigorously officials are pursuing leads in the most serious scandal to shake City Hall in years. After the Mercury News disclosed favoritism toward Cisco in a June article about a networking contract for the new City Hall, officials promised a public accounting and delivered a highly self-critical audit. But Tuesday, much of the council's discussion about the scandal took place behind closed doors.

The politics of the Silva- Davis dispute also are raising eyebrows. Silva is an independent investigator who reports directly to the council; Davis reports to City Manager Del Borgsdorf, whose staff has been at the center of the Cisco investigation.

Er ... yeah. I would love to hear about how this "software glitch" did that.

Thanks for posting, I thought this topic was dead with her resigning. Glad to see its still going on.

Maybe it's just an upset tummy, but my gut feeel is this goes all the way to the top.

We'll see.

Closed door meetings of the council? Over such a non-issue as collusion and corruption in city government.. and it's just a software glitch? Even as the council folks just approved significant reforms in lobbying.

Yup, nothing to see here, move along, folks. ;-)
