American Petroleum Institute to Act as Principal United Nations Standard Products and Services Code Representative of the Oil and Natural Gas Industry
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 9, 2004--The Uniform Code Council, Inc.(R) (UCC(R)) and the American Petroleum Institute (API) today announced an agreement by which the API will develop the voluntary global classification standards of the United Nations Standard Products and Services Code(R) (UNSPSC(R)) for the oil and natural gas industry. The UCC is a leader in facilitating efficient international business and is the code manager of the UNSPSC.
The UNSPSC is a widely adopted global standard for classification of products and services developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Oil and gas companies plan on using the UNSPSC to facilitate electronic commerce, reduce organizational costs, and improve supply chain efficiencies.

Companies use the UNSPSC to facilitate electronic commerce. The UNSPSC provides the basis for procurement processes, enabling users to market products and services more efficiently and avoid the expense of maintaining a proprietary classification code. In addition, sellers, buyers, and procurement specialists can perform analysis and make decisions in time-critical ways that would not be possible without using the UNSPSC. The UNSPSC is an open standard and is available for use by interested parties free of charge. Companies and organizations worldwide are encouraged to incorporate the code into their business systems. Companies that want to play an active role in charting the course of the UNSPSC must become UNSPSC members. Members are eligible to participate on the UNSPSC Steering Committee, request and vote on code changes, provide guidance, and further the global adoption of the code set. BOSTON, July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Yesterday at an event sponsored by companies working in the field of clean energy, Charles Parker, CEO of Boston Carbon Corporation (BCC) and Paul Rodzianko, Senior Vice President of Access Industries, officially turned over 27,000 Greenhouse Gas Certified Trading Credits (CTCs) to the Democratic National Convention. The credits will offset the estimated 27,000 tons of CO2 emissions that will be generated by delegates, media, staff and others as they travel to and from Boston during the week of the convention. The event, titled 'Cleaning Up With Clean Energy', highlighted Senator Kerry's position that clean energy is not only good for the environment but is also good for the economy, as innovative companies create new jobs and spawn whole new fields of technology.
The contribution was made possible through the joint efforts of three companies: Boston Carbon, a leading consulting company advising clients on profitable environmental remediation techniques; Access Industries, a global, private investment firm; and GreenFuel Technologies, a company based around novel biological emissions management technology.
The donation was coordinated through the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Conventions (CERC), an organization that promotes environmental best practices for large conventions, starting with the 2004 national political conventions in Boston and New York. These trading credits certify that an actual reduction of 27,000 tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has been achieved and that the reduction meets all of the criteria laid out by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
"It is widely accepted that greenhouse gas emissions are a major factor in global warming. Our donation highlights the fact that for many companies, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and turning them into carbon credits is not only good for the environment, but also good for their bottom line," said Charles Parker, President of Boston Carbon. Based on anticipated GHG regulations, there is a growing market in both Europe and the United States for GHG emissions credits. According to a study commissioned by the World Bank, approximately 64 million tons of reductions were traded during the first four months of 2004. The average price paid for pre-compliance project-based emission reductions in Europe was approximately $4.00 to $5.00 per ton.

Tell me why UNSPSC is a part U.N?
The code was establish to organize the products and services that the UN was buying. There are other organizations that use the code for similar purpose. The organization www.unspsc.org acts like any other standards body where members can propose and vote on additions/changes to the code. We were not required to wear blue helmets and I don't remember the Security Council overriding any of our actions.
