ABC News' political unit produces a daily newsletter called "The Note," which today makes an idiotic claim.
Forget the fact that that we still can't find a single American who voted for Al Gore in 2000 who is planning to vote for George Bush in 2004. (If you are that elusive figure, e-mail us and tell us who you are and why: politicalunit@abcnews.com.)Don't forget that "The Note" jumped off of the fence of impartiality back in February when they admitted that they are liberal, and actively working for the defeat of President Bush.
Like every other institution, the Washington and political press corps operate with a good number of biases and predilections.So, contrary to the constant carpings about impartiality, keep in mind the ultimate agenda of the Washington press corps in general, and ABC News in particular, as admitted by their own staffers: They want Bush out. Period.They include, but are not limited to, a near-universal shared sense that liberal political positions on social issues like gun control, homosexuality, abortion, and religion are the default, while more conservative positions are "conservative positions."
It still has a hard time understanding how, despite the drumbeat of conservative grass-top complaints about overspending and deficits, President Bush's base remains extremely and loyally devoted to him -- and it looks for every opportunity to find cracks in that base.
More systematically, the press believes that fluid narratives in coverage are better than static storylines; that new things are more interesting than old things; that close races are preferable to loose ones; and that incumbents are destined for dethroning, somehow.

It is a gimmick, just like Limbaugh who has issued the challenge to find a single person who will vote Kerry because he likes Kerry, not just because he hates the President.
Ladies & Gentlemen --You asked if there were any people who voted for Gore who will be switching to Bush.
My mother turned 91 this summer. She cast her first presidential ballot for Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936. She has voted Democrat in the presidential elections ever since.
But, in 1999, she switched her registration from Democrat to Independent. There was one reason: she believed the party had sold its soul to support a rapist and a liar in the impeachment trial.
Nonetheless, she voted for Gore in 2000 -- hopeful that the party could rediscover its bearings, now that Clinton was on the sidelines.
In 2004, however, she will cast her first presidential ballot in favor of a Republican -- for George W. Bush. There are two reasons:
1. In challenging the Florida vote, the Democrat party had revealed that it had NOT rediscovered its bearings and remained as venal and dishonest as it had been during the Clinton administration -- disinterested in the nation's welfare and consumed by its own ambition for power. (That's a pretty close paraphrase of what she told me).
2. Since Florida and, especially, since 9/11, she has observed that the national media are acting in a purely partisan fashion, committed to the defeat of Bush and the election of a Democrat, any Democrat. She no longer trusts anything that the so-called mainstream media might say about anything political. And she's come to recognize that politics also guide the media's coverage of environmental and social issues, as well.
Thus, congratulations are due to network news outlets like ABC. You've contributed toward changing an established voting habit of 64 years. I couldn't do it. But you and the party itself have accomplished what I couldn't...

Geneva Overholser, then the ombudsperson for the Washington Post, addressed me as "a racist, homophobic bigot like David Duke" in an e-mail response.
I had had the temerity to question her column that attempted to "justify" the Post's ignoring the Jesse Dirkasing affair, while lionizing Matthew Sheppard.
But I was dismissed with an ad hominem attack...

I for one have been fotunate for some time to see and hear much of reports about this on tv, many channels - mostly cable. ABC,CBS,NBC - who watches anymore? LOL. I do switch around to see if they cover it. Just a little; and very negative about it. Jump on the Vets. Don't look into allegations. Who would expect anything more from them??? Not me. I will never check them out for any REAL news!!
Fox reporter Hannity has done the very best, IMO. His cohort, Colmes, wouldn't even begin to entertain the idea that Swift Boat Veterans should be heard. He just bashed them as messengers, as did most media outlets. O'Reilly just wants to be so 'fair' he bends a little to much in the breeze I think. On the other hand, he on Fox News is about the only one I've seen who DOES court both sides.
But! Man! Gotta say it's sure getting bigtime press lateley! Yahoo!
I'm just tickled PINK that finally mainstream press got going with this! It seems to me that's where the mainstream do realy get their info. And that goes for newspapers too. Even though they DO BIAS reporting, at least the info is getting out there.
