Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie sent letters to four campaign finance watchdog groups on Monday requesting they investigate the multi-million dollar "soft money" commitments of two billionaires and to disclose the amounts each of them may have received from the pair. He was specifically referring to financier George Soros' pledge of $15 million and Peter Lewis' agreement to donate $12 million to defeat President Bush in 2004.
Gillespie challenged Democracy 21 president Fred Wertheimer to reveal the amount Soros contributed to his organization to lobby Congress to "enact policies that have made him so influential." Fred Wertheimer, president of Democracy 21, which promotes changes in campaign finance, has benefited from Soros's grants over the years.
