I've learned to ignore Jesse.

Except for his racial shakedown racket, he is pretty irrelevant now.

"There are 50 state separate and unequal voting systems," Jackson proclaimed. He elaborated by telling the Trotters that in Wisconsin, for example, felons can vote when they're still in prison. In Illinois, felons have to re-register to vote."

I never heard of the Trotters journalists until now.

More from the column:

***....This year several Trotter columnists interviewed Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry and, earlier, Gen. Wesley Clark when he was still a candidate. I still remember Clark's answer when I asked him why he was opposed to appointing judges who might overturn precedents.

"Without judges willing to overturn precedents," I said, "Plessy v. Ferguson, not Brown v. Board of Education, might still be the law of the land." The former ruling, in the late 19th century, saw the Supreme Court affirm the concept of "separate but equal," while the 1954 Brown decision declared the notion unconstitutional.

"Yes," Clark responded, "but I believe judges should expand rights, not restrict rights."

Those of you who thought judges were to interpret the law as written and act as a check and balance on the executive and legislative branches of government now stand corrected. .....***

Jackassason belongs in prison for conduct prejudice to good order in America. Better yet, a Soviet Gulag, and be refrained from using his dearly beloved term(MotherFu-ker)He used this quite frequently in the nation's capital, on his special guided tours.(especially in the elevators in front of female capital police officers.) Jackasason doesn't speak for all of the blacks in America, just the mentally challenged. I am sure the Rev will come up with a story saying, that Klansmen were stringing up some Brothers in Florida during the 2000 election. This would support his false voter intimidation delusion of grandeur prevarication. (Jesse "the race card' Jackassason) Bush/Cheney 2004

OK, let's dispell with the emotional (and racist) responses and present the facts. There ARE laws on the books in some states (like Florida) which prohibit certain groups (i.e. ex-cons) from voting. As is the case with Florida, the only recourse is a ridiculous bureaucratic big-government system which has been engineered soley to discourage it's use. Now while I feel most ex-cons deserve what they get for beings filthy criminals in the first place, the fact remains that if they "pay their debt to society" in jail, then their rights as Americans should be restored once that debt has been repaid.

Classic case of government stepping in to control the lives and restrict the liberties of the American citizens it considers a threat. While this is normally a cause for empassioned debate on this site, since this affects ex-cons, and to a larger extent, the black community, decision makers seem happy to let it continue. **But part of being a patriot is fighting for the rights of all Americans, whether you like them or not.** So while Jesse might call you a racist for liking white bread more than wheat, he is right to say that these laws exist and that they have not be repealed because they affect blacks to a larger degree than the majority of the population of the states which have such laws.
