D'Amato ex-aide eyes Hillary's job

WASHINGTON - A Wall Street investor who tried to raise private money to keep city firehouses open after 9/11 is exploring a possible run for Sen. Hillary Clinton's seat in 2006.

Republican Adam Brecht, 37, a former aide to ex-Sen. Alfonse D'Amato (R-N.Y.) and the late GOP senator from Pennsylvania John Heinz, is running his first ad in Hamptons magazine to announce his Senate exploratory committee, the Daily News learned yesterday.

Brecht said he spent $6,000 on the ad and will buy more around the state after the November elections, hoping to gauge support for a run at the seat Clinton has vowed to keep - no matter whom the GOP throws at her.

"I think she's been a good celebrity but not necessarily a good senator," he said. "The upstate economy is worse now, there's been zero progress on health care and I don't think the state gets its share of the homeland security money."

Brecht, a Wall Street PR man turned professional investor, founded the group Keep NYC's Firehouses Open after the Sept. 11 attacks. It raised $1.6 million in pledges but Mayor Bloomberg refused to accept the cash, saying he did not want to use private funds for public safety services.

Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Rep. Pete King (R-L.I.) are often mentioned as potential Senate candidates, but if they enter the race, Brecht said he will likely step aside.

Sen. Hillary Clinton boldly put the Republicans on notice yesterday that they will be wasting their time in trying to recruit and finance a GOP opponent for her in 2006.

It would be good to start going after Hillary on November 3. Make her spend the next two years cleaning out that warchest.
