The conversation was about Viet Nam and that time period. We have probably seen the Dick Cavett show tape of the debate between O'Neil and sKerry - so of course they had met be then. O'Neil said he never knew sKerry in VN, because he got kerry's boat after he left.

And they also are trying to act like the other OIC who are now in the Swifties for truth were in the same war-- kind of like, a person fighting in the Pacific was in the same war as the folks fighting in the Atlantic. Meanwhile, in the real world, the Swift boats operated in close proximity with one another.
