PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — A letter containing white powder and a message claiming it was anthrax showed up in the mayor’s mail Wednesday, prompting authorities to lock down city offices and send people to a hospital for decontamination.
Georgette Johnson, press secretary for Mayor Willie Payne, said the letter was opened around midday Wednesday. It was unclear whether the letter had been mailed, Johnson said.
Officials said the powder probably wasn’t anthrax, which killed five people in a string of 2001 mailings.
“Right now we of course don’t know what it is. It’s alleged to be anthrax but of course that’s part of the scare,” Johnson said. “About 99.9 percent of these are duds, but we’re taking all the precautionary measures to make sure everyone’s safe.”
Pontiac police said the FBI was investigating.
Eight people inside and near the mayor’s office when the letter was opened were taken to Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital for decontamination.
“Nobody had any symptoms of anything other than a little anxiety,” Dr. Tressa Gardner said.
City offices were expected to remain closed Thursday.
