Whole of Jordan blacked out
From correspondents in Amman
August 10, 2004

JORDAN suffered an unprecedented nationwide power cut today when supplies of Egyptian gas to the kingdom's main electricity generator in the Red Sea port of Aqaba were abruptly halted.

"The interruption of gas supplies from Egypt to the Aqaba plant is the cause of this outage," Energy Minister Azmi Khreissat told state television.

He told the official Petra news agency that the state power utility had "taken the necessary emergency measures to restore electricity to certain districts of the capital and some other regions of the country".

He promised that a "technical comittee of top officials from the power sector and the energy ministry will investigate" the causes of the blackout.

A second official, who asked not to be identified, said power could be restored as soon as the gas started flowing again from Egypt.
