The Mary Ann myth: Kerry falsifies NH woman’s story
Union Leader ^ | 8/10/04

Posted on 08/09/2004 11:38:51 PM PDT by kattracks

NEXT TIME John Kerry accuses President Bush of misleading the American people, remember Mary Ann Knowles.

Knowles is the Hudson woman whose battle with breast cancer Kerry has turned into a campaign anecdote. Here is what Kerry said about Knowles during his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention on July 29:

“What does it mean when Mary Ann Knowles, a woman with breast cancer I met in New Hampshire, had to keep working day after day right through her chemotherapy, no matter how sick she felt, because she was terrified of losing her family’s health insurance? America can do better. And help is on the way.”

What it means is that John Kerry is fibbing. As Union Leader correspondent Scott Brooks reported on Sunday, Mary Ann Knowles did not have to work through her chemotherapy for fear of losing her health insurance. Employed by Elderhostel, the Boston-based non-profit travel organization for people 55 and older, Mary Ann had 26 weeks of paid disability at her disposal. More was available for a long-term illness. She did not have to work through her chemotherapy. She chose to.

Knowles would have lost some income had she taken the disability leave, said her husband, who is unemployed. But she would not have lost her health insurance, as Kerry has repeatedly misstated.

Asked if the Kerry campaign bothered to get the details of Knowles’ personal story, spokeswoman Judy Reardon said Kerry’s use of the words “every day” in describing Knowles story was “a colloquialism.” She went on: “When a woman has a mastectomy and goes through therapy, I don’t need to double-check on her.”

In other words, Kerry knowingly used the words “every day” when he did not mean “every day,” and he used the phrase: “she still has to go to work every day — just to hang on to their health insurance” when she did not have to work every day and was in no danger of losing her health insurance.

In short, he lied. Repeatedly.

With all that has come to light about Kerry’s voting record and his Vietnam service, his misrepresentation of Marry Ann Knowles’ story should surprise few. Kerry cannot even get his own personal history straight, so how can we expect him to correctly relay someone else’s?

He tells whatever truth he needs to - at that moment!

I know, I know that is an odd definition of truth, but it is his definition!

You see, Clinton repeatly claimed the very mild early 1990s recession was the "worst economy in the last 50 years." He was elected despite that lie. This along with Clinton not being removed from office after lying in Federal Court testimony, led the Dims to conclude that lying is legit public policy discourse. [Clinton also lied in agreements with Congress on legislation.]

This is maybe the most unforgivable sin of Clinton. He made lying, not embellishing, not putting yourself in the best possible light, not spinning, but out right lying part of public discourse in the US. It has been picked up by other Dims and they think it is the key to winning elections. They do not understand that Clinton one with his charisma despite lying and they do not have the same charisma. Maybe a few more years of not controlling any part of the government will convince the Dims they must return to honesty.

Oh joy, more lies from Kerry. I think it's becoming more and more clear, as we see the lies build up ("seered" memories of a Christmas in Cambodia, now this whopper in his nominating speech) that his activities in Vietnam are more consistent with a person who lies to make himself look better than a "true hero."

THIS is the best the Democrat party could do? Pathetic.

Hell, as one who's been on disability since June 10th due to cancer, I can tell that Kerry's story is pure bunk. Sure, the disability pay is less than my usual wage, but it pays the bills...and I'm in no danger of losing either my insurance or my job.

And I'm happy to report that, barring further complications, I will be able to return to work in early September. : )

if this guy doesn't realize that lying during a nationally televised speech is as dumb as dirt, then he's simply not qualified for the office to which he aspires.

Nice idea if it were true---seems to me that about half of the country believes lying is acceptable since they support the "great liars" of our time (Kerry and Clinton)---seems I also read something about it being ok to 'cheat on tests' in our schools of higher education as well, so am afraid "truth" is not what it used to be--

That's some good news.

Both that you're not being fooled and that you're not going to be sick.

From now on just remember this, you're not allowed to be sick. Ya dig?

Cheese!

They never had honesty. If they did they would never get elected to anything.

following the al gore 'lie your way into office' campaign strategy.

Which followed the Clinton 'lie your way into office.

Problem for Kerry and Gore is that Clinton coupled that with a practiced ability to ingratiate himself whomever he applied himself to. That is, Clinton pretended to buy into you before asking you to buy into him.

Kerry and Gore simply don't have the charm to carry off the same whoppers that Clinton can.
