That's a really stupid quote. After all, it took 89 years after the Dec of Independence to free the slaves.

You've completely missed the point of what Keyes said. There are certain moral principles that need to be upheld no matter what the cost. The quote's not stupid at all. It works rather nicely in the context in which it was said.

With all due respect, 89 years, when compared against the backdrop of human history, is the blink of an eye. When you think of the billions of humans who have been enslaved to one group or another over the last few thousand years, it is an absolute miracle that the Declaration was able to deliver freedom in 89 years.

It is easy to forget just what an astonishing document the Declaration is.
