That's what Mary Mitchell (I think that is her name) said that the pubbies had played the race card with Keyes.
So he played it back at the demo rats.
Talk about calling a slave holder a slave holder.
Historically that has always been the way the demo rats have been.

I think in this case it was a defensive move, use it first before the other guy... one less card in the deck once it's been played.
