In an apparent case of Internet graffiti at an online retailer, the cover of a book critical of John Kerry's war record was altered to appear as if the tract supports the Massachusetts senator.
The book cover for the anti-Kerry book "Unfit for Command" was somehow changed Monday on Web bookseller Barnesandnoble.com to read "Fit for Command."
The rest of the information on the page appeared genuine, offering ordering information and a description of the book, which is subtitled "Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out against John Kerry." By late Monday afternoon, the book cover appeared correctly on the site.
A Barnes & Noble representative did not immediately have a comment on the issue when contacted by CNET News.com.
Opinions on Kerry's war record have become a flash point in the days following the Democratic National Convention, where Kerry appeared onstage with members of the swift boat crew he commanded in Vietnam and declared that he was "reporting for duty."
An anti-Kerry group, Swift Veterans for Truth, has created a TV ad with Vietnam veterans criticizing Kerry's war record. Republican Sen. John McCain, who is campaigning for Bush, criticized that ad and called on Bush to denounce it, noting that none of those in the ad were actually on the same boat as Kerry.
Pro-Kerry groups have also taken to the Web, including America Coming Together, which has a George W. Bush parody done by Will Ferrell of Saturday Night Live fame.
The Internet offers a low-cost avenue for such partisan spots, whose backers may or may not have much in the way of funds for an expensive TV ad push.
Representatives of the Bush and Kerry campaigns were not immediately available for comment.
The photo below appears to currently be on Barnes & Noble's server.
On the plus side, maybe they'll sell some copies to liberal idiots who expect a pro-Kerry book. ;)
"internet grafitti"....sure...its called hacking, and it is a crime. barnes and noble has to be very careful to take this seriously cuz big spending book buyers like me can get pissed off and start buying elsewhere.
These anti-Bush folks are really dumb. This may be funny to them (actually, it is funny in a very juvenille way), but it just creates more publicity for the book!
Nothing like free publicity...
Typical Dem ploy: deface, deride or defame what you cannot address with facts.
We should therefore expect a lot of this.
Swift Vets on Oreilly and Hannity tonight
Monday, August 9, 2004
8:00 pm: Steve Gardner will appear on the Bill O'Reilly Show (Fox News cable TV, national).
9:00 pm: John O'Neill will appear on the Hannity & Colmes (Fox News cable TV, national).
Infantile and silly behavior. What can you say?
I'm not convinced B&N didn't have a hand in this. You are just slapped in the face with all the anti-Bush books at both of the B&Ns closest to where I live, with other conservative titles in much less visible spots.
Well said.
A Kerry supporter with the ability to hack a web page is a little surprising, but the ethics of such conduct is about what one would expect.
Kerry Spokesman: "Its absurd to blame the Kerry campaign for this juvenile act. John F Kerry would never do away with UN."
If they were worth anything, Christmas in Cambodia is perfect for SNL.
*groan* *snrk* mrfl glrb BAHwahahahahaha!!!!
Agree totally! The B&N stores here bury all conservative literature in the back. I remember getting into it with the manager, when Coulter's "Treason" was first released in hardcover.
B&N had a special stand promoting Ann's new book, but the stand (and every book on it) was facing the wall in the rear of the store. When I confronted the manager, she just blew it off as "some kids playing a joke." However, she couldn't explain why, three days later, the stand was (again) facing the wall.
My point to her was that ALL bestsellers should be displayed at the front of the store. I asked, "Would it kill you to be honest?" .... as I walked toward the exit.
...sung to the Band Aid song " Do they know its Christmas time at all?"
We hit it pretty hard earlier today here:

And Drudge had it posted on his website.
I called B&N and they have since corrected the error.
I can say DU, can you?
On second thought, no, those people aren't smart enough to 'hack'.
Ah! I misread the URL on the picture in post #1. I thought it was still up.
My bad. Apologies to B&N.
