DUBAI (AFP) - An Islamic group said it has "detained" the Iranian consul in the central Iraqi city of Karbala for stirring sectarian strife, Al-Arabiya television reported.
The Islamic Army in Iraq (news - web sites), in a statement read by the Dubai-based channel, said Faridoon Jahani was "detained for stirring sectarian strife and for activities outside his diplomatic duties".
Pictures were shown of the diplomat's passport, identity and business cards along with what appeared to be footage of him speaking, without sound, against a black backdrop.
The group warned Iran against its "blatant interference in Iraqi internal affairs," the station said.
It added that the diplomat warned "all states against violating internationally recognized diplomatic duties."
A group with the same name kidnapped two Pakistanis in Iraq last month and subsequently executed them for cooperating with the US-led multinational forces.
The Qatar-based Al-Jazeera channel first reported that Sajid Naeem, 29, and Azad Hussein Khan, 49, had been killed by the group which demanded that Pakistan not send troops to Iraq.
The same group announced it had released an Iraqi driver also held captive amid a spate of hostage-taking by Iraqi militants "after it became apparent that he had been deluded and repented," Al-Jazeera reported.

Good question. The Baathists have not gone from Iraq, not at all, and Allawi himself has strong Baathist connections.
This kidnapping is one of lots of mysterious events in the Iraq war zone.
