The true wonder of America is that, not only did she crush Japan, she rebuilt her.

The Japanese seem so ungrateful that we chose to end the war quickly with the dropping of the second bomb.
They forget that the war in Europe was over, and Stalin had declared war on them the day before. Instead of dropping the bomb or invading Japan, we could've easily just kicked back and watched the Soviet Union take a bite out of their butts. History sure would've been different. Perhaps their beloved emperor-god would've committed suicide in a bunker, and a big Wall would've divided Tokyo for 40+ years. Yes, that would've been sooooo much better!

I had the good fortune to be in Nagasaki on this date in 1958. There was little evidence of the terrible effects of the bomb then, only open spaces punctuated by new buildings and memorials. The city was actually celebrating something (I don't remember what) and everyone was wearing their best clothing and enjoying the good weather.
At one point, when I and my wife were trying to see into an arena where some sort of event was being staged, the Mayor saw us and invited us to come sit in the elevated seats with him. He showed no animosity toward us and was a gracious host throughout the day.
I must point out that I wasn't a high governmnet offical, only a lowly enlisted sailor from Sasebo. As is usually the case, succeeding generations seem to have invented the outrage we are now subjected to.

Seeing as to how the UN wasn't founded until October of 1945, it might have been difficult for Truman to consult with them in August, don't you think?

Actually it was Ripley who said, "I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure." Later, Hicks brought that up as "his" plan.
