Colorado GOP US Senate Primary

Posted on 08/07/2004 10:31:43 AM PDT by MplsSteve

It's only a couple of days 'til the big show-down between Pete Coors and Bob Schaffer in Colorado.

What are the polls showing? Who's gonna win? Why? Do you have any tidbits or gossip?

Opinions anyone?

I hope Peter Coors wins. He has the best chance of taking on salazar in the general. The GOP needs to keep this seat in order to retain Congress. Oklahoma looks safe for us now, but Illinois and Alaska are not. So Coors has the best chance to keep this seat.

The latest state poll is within the margin of error.

Hope the negative ads don't keep people from backing whichever one wins the primary.

I'm voting Schaffer but will back Coors in the general if he wins the primary.

While conservative businessman Pete Coors is leading in the GOP primary, Bob Schaffer is the better conservative. He has experience in the US Congress, is a man of his word and would be a champion of the conservative agenda.

So far, Democrat Ken Salazar is leading both GOP candidates by significant margins. Salazar has even outraised Coors in the all important funding department. Things could turn around for the GOP, but its an uphill battle right now.

Tight race. The last I saw, Coors was polling slightly better against Salazar, but it was all within the margin of error.

I have to be neutral to Coors versus Schaffer, but the sentiments expressed seem pretty correct.

Coors did not do well in the debates here, and Schafer did. CO also has a history of wealthy Republican candidates who have gone on to lose elections. Bruce Benson and Steve Schuck come to mind.

Still, Coors inherited the Campbell staff and has the money to win. Schaffer has the skills and experience.

As to Salazar, his opponent does not have any money to compete so Salazar has enjoyed a pretty clear field. Party activists will decide this one.

Both sides will depend on turnout. We also have a ballot proposal to end the circus in Denver because of animal rights issues, which will help turnout.

Salazar will not be as attractive once the primaries are over and election advertising begins in earnest. IF Schaffer wins the GOP side, I think the national party will start helping fund him, along with a couple of 527 committees.

Ditto. I was wavering between the two until I got a push poll saying nasty things about Schaffer and I decided I didn't like Coors (but I still prefer him to Salazar.)

Just curious...why are you neutral?

Are you a party official or officeholder?
