So true.
Is that statement copyrighted?
It applies to journalists, too.
A Classic statement
More likely it's a result of the Northern European influence. Same here in Milwaukee, with the Poles and Krauts.
Catholic social doctrine, while often mis-interpreted, is damn near the antithesis of Libertarian and Old Republican beliefs. Old-style Democrats (think Humphrey, Kennedy,) came from that Catholic social tradition.
While the national DemParty has moved WAAAYYY to the left (could Humphrey still be a Dem.?) Obey and a few others have managed to dance effectively.
OTOH, I don't think the Pubbies have put up ANY good opponents.
Interpretation of theology? OK, Mr. Obey, how do you "interpret" "Thou shall not kill."?
Obey should change his religion or his last name.
Just another example of the type of mentality we are fighting at catholicsagainstkerry.com

"...then he should not call himself a Catholic!"
You are right: long ago he should have told the bishop to shove his fatwas and then he should have left the church. If he's interested in "personal relation with the divinity" - he could maintain it from outside the church just as well.
Ping!
The National Catholic Distorter must be green with envy that America gets to publish Obey's pro-abort article.
His reasons are classic...
"that in most instances it (abortion) is morally wrong, I decline to force my views into laws that, if adopted, would be unenforceable and would tear this society apart. That judgment may be wrong, but it is a judgment honestly arrived at, and one that I am obligated to make."
I think most types of slavery are wrong, most holocausts are wrong, most stealings are wrong, most murders are wrong, but I am not going to force my opinion on anyone... after all, we live in a democracy...
Secondly, I like the fact that he said ... MOST... no... ALL Abortions are morally wrong!
It is my judgement then you are obligated to stop receiving the Eucharist.
Are you talking to me?
Ah, Rep. [Dis]Obey - ugh! Left foot of fellowship alert!
Rhetorical question - why the heck don't these termites just admit they don't intend to obey and abide by the Church's teachings and simply depart, vamoose, exit stage left?!
I suppose they won't be satisfied until they've totally ruined the Church. Talk about having searchec consciences! You sure this isn't a story about some episcopagan and his guru?! It may as well be.
FWIW, saw a Pubbie operative over the weekend and asked when the Pubs would find a candidate to defeat Obey. He just laughed. It may never happen...
