WASHINGTON -- A report that one of a group of veterans opposing Senator John F. Kerry's bid for the presidency had said he made a mistake signing an affidavit questioning Kerry's medals rocketed around the airwaves yesterday, sparking a backlash on conservative radio programs and the Drudge Report website.
The programs asserted that retired Lieutenant Commander George Elliott had been misquoted in yesterday's Boston Globe when he said he had made a "terrible mistake" in signing an affidavit suggesting Kerry did not deserve to be awarded the Silver Star. Kerry was awarded the medal for killing a Viet Cong soldier.

this is why one should never speak to the media without a recorder...
The sKerry camp thinks that confusion benefits them. Methinks Da Globe is trying to help sow some confusion. The deal is, the issues aren't that complicated. sKerry's first Purple Heart was denied by his CO, and there is no unit after action report documenting any enemy combat action that day. No enemy combat action, no legitimate Purple Heart. Once one chink in the armor of his war record is found, and after the obligatory denials, we'll be hearing the sKerry camp taking some stupid postitions, such as: it's only about war; everybody lies about war.
This is the newspaper that cooperated with the Kennedys to put out cover-up stories about Ted being booted out of Harvard for cheating.
It also says Drudge is all washed up on his claim that he wrote the Kerry Intro to the book.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Isn't the Globe the paper that published, perhaps only online, the staged porn shot "torture" pictures, when Abu Ghraib was breaking? Do I have the paper correct?
Good point. I've been our spokesman on two FReeps here, and before I do it again, I really should get a little recorder.
Full story on Drudge isn't that simple.

I am with you, but they are saying this is a lie. I don't know how they can get away with this.
You are indeed correct. And The Globe is owned by.....The NYTimes! Fanfare, 'What the f...are you guys doing up there? More f...ing balloons...'
Kerry is now toast. Its starting to be reflected in the polls, and will snowball as we roll to Nov 2. What's at stake now is Kerry, who wisely did not quit the Senate, being able to retain his Senate seat in 2006. In order to do so, he and his minions must maintain some obfuscation on this issue so that it does not destroy his 2006 campaign too. Just a bit, here in the People's Republic of MA, should do.
Free speech. As your mama once told you, 'Don't believe everything you read.'
Remember that the Boston Globe is the "news" rag that broke the story about Bush's "AWOL" just days before the 2000 election- a story which was investigated and debunked by no less a rag than the New York Times within weeks.
The Globe never retracted its story, even after it was proven to be false.
Democrat talking points aboout Bush's "AWOL" STILL contain quotes from the original Globe false hit piece.
The Globe has been, and continues to be, played by the DNC like a faux Stradivarius.
In spite of all the hoopla and accusations, I have a gut feeling that shooting a fleeing enemy does not qualify for the silver star. It is also unusual for the recipient to recommend himself for the medal without support from witnesses on the scene. Elliott is in a box as he had to know from witnesses if the scene happened and whether it rose to the level of valor before recommending the medal.
Just shooting a single enemy does not get a silver star.
Not to mention the fact that the reporter is a paid employee of the Kerry campaign.
Not necessarily. There are records to support the issuing of the medal. Elliott can't release those records, and by his demeanor, he is not concerned about the release, either way. He says Kerry lied, and he stands by that. Either the story in the Boston Globe book is true, or the story in the paperwork supporting the issuance of the medal are true. Can't be both.
Kerry can clear this up by having all of his service records made public.
