The only thing I know about Mankato, MN is that it is the site of the largest mass hanging in American history. In 1862 the federal government hung 38 Sioux Indians, all at the same time from a huge gallows.

I believe that Mankato was the scene of a big James Gang bank robbery that went sideways.

Nope, that was Northfield MN where the citizens damn near wiped out the James and Younger's gang.
