I live in Lancaster County. I'll believe the Amish will have an impact on the election when I start seeing Bush/Cheney 04 stickers on the back of a few buggies... :^)

Wow, another good, hardworking, honest group of Americans for the Democrats to revile and make fun of. Hope the Amish are ready for the smear job of their lifetimes...

"Pennsylvania and Ohio are just absolute battleground states, and to think that the Amish could weigh in to the tune of thousands of votes that are clearly going to be Republican - that could be very significant for Bush," said Chet Beiler, a former Amish who has been dropping off voter registration forms at Amish businesses and farms in hopes of signing up as many as 3,000 new voters.

“A former Amish.” That brings up some questions…

First, that Amish usually (always?) believe in shunning which is ultimately meant to be redemptive and bring those being shunned back into the fold. So why any member of the Church would interact with him is puzzling. That, because he isn’t non-Amish or a child of Amish parents that has yet to join – he’s *former* Amish.

Then, those that are members are to obey God and the Church. Part of that is to live a life separate from the world and not to concern themselves with worldly affairs.

But then, they do make allowances for things… like they may not drive a car but they could ride IN a car (for work or something). Still, I wouldn’t want to pin my re-election hopes on it.
