My War - Fear and Loathing in Iraq ^

Posted on 08/05/2004 5:53:22 PM PDT by toddly

Now here's what really happened: I was in my room reading a book (Thin Red Line) when the mortars started coming down. Usually when we get mortared it'll only one, maybe two mortars. But this mortar attack went on for almost 20 minutes. Each one impacting the FOB every couple minutes. Something was up. My roommate ripped open the door and yelled "Get your guys, Go to the motor pool! The whole BATTALION is rolling out!" Holy s**t, the whole Battalion? This must be big. So I ran over and woke my guys up, yelled, "Get your f**kin s**t on and head down to the motor pool! Time: Now!"

I am not a huge fan of the RWS. It would seem that this guy got his to work, this time. The requirement to get out on top of the vehicle to reload does seem to negate the advantage of firing from under armor, but at least he has cover while he is firing, until his ammo runs out again. The Humvee gunners are out from the waist up all the time.

An entirely new mount for the system with an internal feed tray fed from inside is what they need.

I talked to a Marine Hummvee gunner and he said he'd rather have two .30's than a .50. The Europeans use 20mm's.

Yup. Whenever they saw a Tiger, they sent four Shermans after it.
And expected to get one back.
This makes good reading:

If you're firing your rifle out those hatches and the .50 cal fires right over your head, the muzzle blast and noise will < mess > you up.
