In part because this is now the 21st Century
Ex-ter-min-ate! Ex-ter-min-ate!
I think the charm of the original show (in almost all its incarnations) was the charming acting, relatively crude special effects, and the sense of humor in the writing.
Since in the 21st Century, I expect that emphasis will be put on FX, and less on finding quality actors and crafting good stories with escapist fun and genuine wit, I expect this to be a miss rather than a hit.
But wait and see. The TV movie several years back was a letdown, for reasons related to the above. I'll give the new Doctor a shot, but my expectations are low.
I half expect them to blame the Bush administration for the Dalek invesion of Earth. "If only the bloody Americans had consulted the UN..." or words to that effect.
The Doctor returns in 2005! Good thing or bad thing?
Good thing. Depending on his companion, of course. Ah, Leela (above)! Or do I prefer Romana (below)? Tom Baker did (he married her), but I'm firmly in Leela's camp <G>
Certainly the idea of a 21st-Century Dr. zipping about a British-accented universe in an old police call box sounds less exciting than it once did.
I think they'll easily be able to get non-British accented actors, though I'll kinda miss that quaint touch. I'd love to have more "representation" of the current mix of accents from the British Isles. There are quire a few "lads from sunnier climes" who could factor quite well into Dr. Who stories.
And the British might just be ready for a new point of view. Imagine a new Dr. putting a stick into the eye of the PC wisdom at the BEEB? Who knows? It might just catch on.
Leela. No, Romana. No, Leela. Romana. Leela. Romana. No, Leela. Romana...
Ach...my one guilty pleasure. Dr. Who re-runs. Wonder what the new ones will be like? Oh well...can't be any worse than Sci-Fi's redux of "Battlestar Galactica"! ; )
I use to sneak into my parents room late at night to watch Dr. Who (my father would pretend not to notice) I loved it then and my love for British humor continued. my love for Sci-Fi was cemented when my 4th grade teacher gave me a book by Arthur C. Clarke, "Have Space Suit, Will Travel"
OOOPss, that should read ROBERT A. HEINLEIN
not A. C. Clarke.
Leela- #1
Romana- last place
That's putting it pretty generously.Seriously, I love Dr. Who, especially the Tom Baker incarnation. Your absolutely right about its charm -- a PixelWork-produced Dr. Who just wouldn't seem right.
Just hope they bring back the Master!!
Leela!Leela!Leela!
Clarke is way too cerebral for HSSWT. Don't get me wrong, he's on a par with Heinlein, just... different.
Let me put it this way, I don't think ACC would enjoy FR. I KNOW RAH would thrive here!
