WARSAW (AFP) - Polish Prime Minister Marek Belka will discuss the situation in Iraq (news - web sites) and US investments in Poland during a working visit to Washington on Monday, government spokesman Dariusz Jadowski said.

Jadowski said Belka would hold a separate meeting with US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

Belka would also have a working breakfast with Lockheed Martin, the US aircraft maker which last year signed a 3.5 billion dollar contract to sell Poland 48 F-16 fighter jets.

During the meeting with Lockheed Martin Belka is expected to discuss the promised six billion dollar compensatory investment package which went along with the fighter jet deal, deputy Economy Minister Krzysztof Krystowski said.

Last week White House spokesman Trent Duffy announced that the United States and Poland enjoy "a strategic alliance, one rooted in shared values and a common struggle for freedom" and described Poland as "an essential partner in the international effort to help the people of Iraq."

Poland is one of Washington's key allies in Iraq, and leads a multinational force of 6,200 military personnel in a majority Shiite area south of Baghdad.

Belka became Polish prime minister on May 2, after a stint running economic policy in Iraq for the US-led coalition, under then US overseer Pauk Bremer.
