I call upon the combined brainpower of Stargate fans to help me out.
The reason I never watched Stargate - and yes, those who don't know me think it's a petty reason - is that the name of the show, as listed in my TV Guide, is "Stargate SG1."
Now, I'm led to understand that "SG" stands for "Stargate."
So the show's full name is "Stargate Stargate 1."
My Genetic Redundancy Gene won't allow me to watch a show whose creator perpetrated a grammatical solecism of such magnitude.

I knew a guy in college who didn't like Madonna's "Vogue" because at one point she rhymes "to it" with itself.

The redundancy thing isn't as uncommon as you'd think. It could also apply to CBS's new hit NAVY:NCIS. The NCIS stands for "Naval Criminal Investigative Service." So the full title is really "NAVY: Naval Criminal Investigative Service."
Possibly this should be investigated by the Department of Redundancy Department. ;)

It would better be punctuated "Stargate: SG-1".
There once was a movie called "Stargate"
Then there was the spinoff TV show. "SG-1" is the name of a team of explorers who use the stargate. (There are several other teams, named SG-2, etc., which appear sometimes in the show.) Don't let the bad punctuation in the title put you off. It's every bit as good as Babylon 5.

OK, here goes the "Stargate: SG-1" explanation. Notice the colon? [:] It is the reason. Just as "Star Trek: The Next Generation" has the colon to show that "The Next Generation" is a part of the "Star Trek" series, so too does the colon show that "SG-1" is part of the "Stargate" series.
SG-1 is the team that is focused on in "Stargate: SG-1", just as the team that is trapped in Atlantis is the focus of the new series "Stargate: Atlantis".
A bit presumptive on the part of the producers, but it was intended to be only the first in a series of "Stargate" shows.
That's the explanation, so maybe your GRG will allow you to check it out =)

Someone may already have pointed this out, but...
The reason the show is named Stargate SG1 isn't due to a grammatical error. If you had watched it, then you'd know that there are different USAF teams that use the stargate. The teams are named serially (SG1, SG2, etc.) and the show focuses on the team named SG1 where the designation SG stands for "Stargate Team."
Some other teams are:
SG-3 - Marine combat unit, lead by Colonel Makepeace.
SG-5 - Marine combat unit.
SG-7 - Scientific Corps.
SG-8 - Medical team.
SG-9 - Diplomatic Corps., led by attorney Major Stan Kovachek.
SG-11 - Engineering Corps.
Not an unusual name at all for a military operation.

I think you're supposed to put a comma (or a rest) between "Stargate" and "SG-1". Stargate is the name of the franchise. The series actually was supposed to be the sequel to the movie. SG-1 is the team lead by Col Jack O'Neal.
If you notice the opening credit with the title, "Stargate" is the header with a line under it and then SG-1 appears below the line

Your problem is not a gene, it's that broomstick stuck where it doesn't belong.
Stargate is the name of the main character, the device for interstellar worm hole travel. SG-1 (not Stargate- 1) is the name of the team comprised of the four main (human) characters. There is no solecism whatsoever.
