Foreign diplomats are sceptical of the explanation given by the six-member independent inquiry panel for the disproportionate use of force at Krue Se Mosque on April 28.
At a briefing yesterday, diplomats asked panel chairman Suchinda Yongsunthorn, a former ambassador, how the government would treat the panel's initial 30-page report of its findings and what action was likely on its recommendations, sources said.
Only 38 foreign diplomats, including eight ambassadors, of the 70 invitees attended yesterday's briefing by Mr Suchinda, who distributed a five-page letter he gave to Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Tuesday along with the report.
The diplomats also wondered what penalties would be imposed on the officers involved in the April 28 clashes in which 106 militants were killed, including 32 inside Krue Se Mosque in Muang district of Pattani province.
Mr Suchinda replied the officers would be treated according to the law. He said the inquiry had no authority to identify guilty parties, sources said.
The excessive use of force obviously showed a lack of coordination among those in charge, he said, but diplomats should understand the intense and hectic situation security forces faced during the nine-hour operation that day.
He said it was up to the government to decide how much compensation should be paid, and to whom, the sources said.
The head of the European Commission Delegation to Thailand, Klauspeter Schmallenbach. said after the one-hour briefing that they were not provided with a copy of the full report, so it was difficult to draw conclusions.
When diplomatic missions sent people into the field their job was to check out the situation, not to assess human rights conditions, Mr Schmallenbach said.
Hungarian charge d'affaires Delo Baphori said while he was thankful for the briefing he was looking forward to the Suchinda inquiry's final report, expected to come out in a month.
Mr Suchinda also said that any religious sites should be respected and that intrusions should not be permitted without the highest level of approval from the authorities.
His briefing was the second attempt by the government to pacify international condemnation of the excessive use of force against the mostly Muslim militants.
We get an international outcry only when 100 + of these terrorists attack police and military waving knives and some guns. Of course they were killed. A bunch hiding in a mosque and firing at the military were killed. Now the world is outraged at the killing of the innocent in a house of worship.
And the Europeans call us arrogant.
Why is Thailand even discussing this with foreign diplomats?
"Of course they were killed."
Of course they were, I hope the rest of the losers got the message. Too bad these Islamofacist Jihadis are so evil that even the formerly peaceful Buddhists must kill them, but so be it. May they kill many more, if needed, and send them on the next round of the cycle of life and death, until they get the ******* message.
Good post! We're in a world war folks, and I think it will likely get worse before it gets better.
If a single policeman or paramilitary was injured or even risked injury in putting down this insurrection, then MORE force, not less, would have been justified.
This is not a game. This is a WAR, forced upon us by the very people now crying foul. They deserve no audience, and no consideration from the living. They can make their peace with the dead.
"Why is Thailand even discussing this with foreign diplomats?"
That was my first thoughts also.
This is probably a islamic jihadist temporary collusion with communists and all other anti-freedom, antiAmerican radical group in the world. Oh --- did I mention the dnc is probably in there also?
The Thais fear threatened trade sanctions form the EU and others. There was a big international hudoo over this since most of those killed were 17 to 25 and the largest single group was killed in a holy mosque thus getting the islamic nation's panties in a bind.
Excellent point. As soon as threat comes from a Mosque, the Mosque should be blown off the face of the earth. I don't give a damn about who is inside. Those who worship the pedophile prophet are damned to hell anyway.
Last winter I way OBL posters in the elevated walkway connecting a BTA station with Central Dept Store. If anything, Bangkok is being far too restrained in dealing with the insurgents. They must not let it spread or else they will be in a world of hurt.
Is that the Chit Lom station or the Sala Dang station at Silom near the Ducit? Interesting, it would be there for tourist intimidation as that is the center of the high rent district. Also, a lot of Arabs live near Silom.
Chit Lom....
"Last winter I way OBL posters" ????? Now that's a brain fart I have no explanation for (other than creeping old age! ;). I meant to write "Last winter I SAW OBL posters...." FReegards....
Apparently, the Thai are treating this as an internal matter, and are discussing it minimally with the European busybodies. How I wish these "humanitarians" were as concerned in India and Pakistan, where the sandmaggots are killing with impunity.
My congratulations to the Thai for dealing with cockroaches in the only language that they understand. I just missed the part where the mosque was razed.
Ironically, meanwhile, in the United States, two muslims arrested, one the imam of a mosque, for attempting to purchase a ground-to-air missile...
Is there anything that can be done to prevent another Serbia?
If Malaysia could be convinced to stop offering the Islamists a safe haven, it would help. However, Muslims don't seem to often retreat from their demands for dominance, do they?
I need to give that one some thought.
New around here?
Got your panties in a wad?
Oh, and the British WERE harsh to the founding fathers so long ago, we had to Kill them and throw them out of our country.
Maybe you didn't get this in school yet.
