He's the Yoko of the Electras By Dean Johnson Wednesday, August 4, 2004
Lennon vs. McCartney, Jagger vs. Richards, Simon vs. Garfunkel . . . rock 'n' roll has a rich history of feuding band members.
Now politics has split the Electras, presidential contender John Kerry's '60s prep-school group.
Kerry played bass for the Electras when he was a student at St. Paul's in Concord in the early 1960s. The band played a few gigs, made a local album and went their separate ways. But with Kerry running for president, interest in that original record has skyrocketed.
So band members Jack Radcliffe, Larry Rand, John Prouty, Peter Lang and Andy Gagarin recently got together to discuss rereleasing their album on CD.
But ``the reunion disintegrated'' when the members couldn't agree on a distributor or how to spend potential profits, Rand said.
Democratic Electras wanted to send the profits to the Kerry camp, Rand told the New Bedford Standard-Times. But Republicans Radcliffe and Gagarin disagreed.
So now the disc is available at two dueling Web sites for the same $14.
According to Radcliffe, electrasrockandrollband.com offers the disc with an airbrushed cover that omits sax player Lee Scarboro (who didn't play on the album). Some money from sales may wind up in Kerry's camp.
Radcliffe said his johnkerryandtheelectras.com site should be up today. It will offer the CD with original artwork, and profits will be evenly split among all band members, including Kerry.
``John (Kerry) hasn't been involved in this,'' he said. ``We've tried to reach him to let him know the money, if there is any, will be held in escrow for him.''
What a compliment. To be called the "Yoko" of anything means that you put artistic integrity above everything else. The fact that your music is played to drive away vermin and pests is another issue.
I suspect that it will not drive people away, a la Yoko, but bore them to tears with blandness.
LOL... classic
