A "ping" is basically a heads up to you, to check out a particular post. You will see it if you click on "my comments" at the upper right.

A ping is a post to another FReeper (or FReepers) to invite them to read a particular thread. Many FReepers have 'ping lists' that alert groups of folks to threads of special interest to them.

A "ping" is just a way to say "hey, over here".
