Was he a social conservative or more of a libertarian conservative? I'm curious, rather than assuming either way.

" 'Our criminal justice system is not based on justice; it is a quota system where conviction is the only scorecard,' he said."

Awwww...poor baby. He doesn't have to serve a single day in jail and he thinks he has a right to complain about the conviction?

Seven years probabtion is too lenient as far as I'm concerned. He's lucky I wasn't responsible for deciding his punishment.

I'm not totally sure. Maybe someone else will comment.
He was pretty socially conservative on air.

He started out doing commentary on a Rock station, usually against the school district or city hall. Then he went to work for Dan Patrick (Born-Again Sports Commentator Turned Entrepreneur,) on KPRC 950 AM which was bought by Clear Channel. Dan bought KSEV 700 AM and brought Jon and crew with him.

All poor Jon had to do is go to trial and let a jury of his peers determine his guilt and sentence!
They may have acquitted him, then again, probably not!

Probation! And he's COMPLAINING?

Well, the bastard would prefer jail to the ass kicking I'd give him as soon as I got my hands on him...

Won't he have to register as a sex offender as well? I used to listen to him every day when I lived in Harris County. What a shocker when I heard this a few weeks ago.

In a different article, it did mention that he would have to register as a sex offender and that he would have to stay 1000 ft away the girl and from children. There was another report that he would have to sell his home and move, since he lives within 1000 ft of a school -- and besides, he has to stay away from the girl.

"Those of you who have listened to my radio show and read my newspaper columns over the years know how strong a supporter I was of our criminal justice system. I can only say how misguided I was. Our criminal justice system is not based on justice; it is a quota system where conviction is the only scorecard," he said.

The nerve of him to make a statement like that, as if HE is the victim. That's just plain evil.

Actually, it was deferred adjudication, not probation, although the practical effect is nearly the same.

What I find interesting is that he apologizes to the victim, and then claims he was railroaded.

What a pantload.

Jon talked in sound bites and seldom let himself be moved by the facts. He would bitch about the school board and when someone explained there was not a damn thing they could do about it and the problem needed to be addressed by the state, he would go right back to his rants.

Jon also opposed conservative Christians in Ft. Bend County. Commissioner Meyers (FReeper), Sugar Land Councilman Gaston (FReeper), and the last Mayor were always being attacked by him. Our very Conservative SREC Rep was his target on more than one occasion.

Further while Jon professed to be a Christian, I've asked people for years, and no one around here has ever seen him in a Church.

Yes, for the next 17 years.

He wasn't a libertarian conservative, but he didn't really fit the social conservative mold either. He was more of an anti-liberal if that makes sense.

The interesting thing is the DA is a good friend of Jon's and the Judge was the best draw he could have made in the county. If he didn't like the deal he could have gone to trial.

...or more of a libertarian conservative?

Libertarians are not conservatives. They are not true anarchists, but edge near to that line. If Libertarian policies were to be enacted in their fullest measure, they would lead to anarchy.

While I'm also not all that fond of libertarianism, they tend to align either toward conservatives (the sort that you'll find here on Free Republic) or liberals (the sort you'll find advocating anarchy). The former sort are often called "conservatives" because they are fiscally conservative and tend to support Republicans in practice. The latter sort are usually called "liberals" because they emphasize the leftist positions on things like abortion and homosexuality and have delusions about harmonizing anarchy and communism (don't laugh -- they really do seem to believe this combination is possible). Of course there are also the true believer libertarians who want to take over New Hampshire and actually vote Libertarian but they often look like conservatives and are called "conservative" by the liberal press, hence my question.

I know it sounds like some of us are piling on Jon Matthews, but I never cared for him. When he was the only conservative talk show host I could listen to during my morning commute, I'd listen. But he never struck me as being particularly sharp, and he certainly didn't let facts get in the way of some of things he proclaimed.

He called himself King Jon and nearly every day he'd sing Happy Birthday to some listener, and he wasn't that great of a singer. His commentary was far more shallow than you can find on many threads at FR.

There is now another conservative talk show host in the morning competing against Jon's radio station, who is far wittier and who has better takes by far than Jon ever did.

Libertarian............I live in Houston area. Used to listen to him every day. I still don't want to believe it, but if he was innocent, I think that he of all people would have fought like hell. I'm anxious to hear what he has to say...IF he ever does.
