Illegal immigrant apprehensions in Yuma area set record for July

Agents from the Yuma sector of the U.S. Border Patrol have apprehended more illegal aliens in the month of July than in any other July in the sector's history.

In one of the hottest months of the year, agents from the Yuma, Wellton and Blythe stations arrested and processed 10,773 aliens in the 31-day month, said Joe Brigman, spokesman for the Border Patrol's Yuma sector.

In recent years, apprehensions normally taper down when the hotter part of the summer arrives, Brigman said, but that has not been the case this year. In fact, the patrol has seen no signs that the number of alien entries in the Yuma area are going to decrease in August and September.

"Based on the continued number of entries and apprehensions so far for May, June and July, there are no indicators that it's tapering off," Brigman said. "If anything, it's increasing."

Because of the increased alien entries and apprehensions in July, the Yuma sector has received more manpower and resources to better handle the higher number of entries and apprehensions in the area, Brigman said.

In the month of July, eight bodies of migrants were found dead in the Yuma sector, Brigman said, with four of them dying from heat-related causes. Two of the aliens died from a motor vehicle accident where the vehicle they were in crashed into a Yuma canal. One of the deaths is the result of a suspected homicide in San Luis that police detectives are still investigating. And the eighth death is unknown as agents found skeletal remains in south Yuma County believed to be those of an illegal alien.

Also during the month of July, patrol agents rescued 28 aliens that could have died if agents did not find them in time, Brigman said.

"Had we not intervened in the situations, there's a high degree of probability that they would've either died or suffered grievous bodily injury," Brigman said.

The most recent alien rescue occurred on Saturday when agents from the Wellton station found six illegal immigrants about 20 miles south of Tacna in the open desert about 6:30 a.m., Brigman said. Aliens in the group told agents they were in the desert since July 29. They added that five other aliens were walking north toward lights they could see in Tacna to get some water because all 11 of them were suffering from dehydration.

Agents then began search and rescue efforts to locate the missing aliens. About two hours later, agents found the group a few miles to the north, Brigman said.

Brigman said the aliens were about 18 miles south of I-8 and the town of Tacna where they could get assistance. Because of the hot summer day and their lack of water, Brigman said their chances of survival would have been slim.

"Given the condition of the individuals, their location, lack of water and daytime temperatures forecasted to reach 110 degrees," Brigman said, "it is highly probable that without intervention by agents patrolling the area, most, if not all, of the subjects would have been at a high risk of losing their lives."

Illegal alien apprehensions go down = Border Patrol not doing its job.

Illegal alien apprehensions go up = Border Patrol not doing its job.

The world according to the guy whose only issue is illegal immigration.
