Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez launched a broadside attack at Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday, saying the GOP governor is acting increasingly partisan and will see his popularity fade if he keeps it up.
"He was elected to put an end to the bipartisan bickering," Núñez, D-Los Angeles, said. "He cannot continue to bash the Legislature unjustly and at the same time want to work with us to solve problems in the state."
"I think it comes at his own peril," Núñez said. "The Democrats that give him high numbers now, approval ratings, when they see that he's really more of a partisan than a nonpartisan governor, I think he starts losing respect out in the public."
In a 45-minute interview at his office in the Capitol, Núñez - one of the Democratic lawmakers Schwarzenegger branded as "girlie men" during the recent state budget impasse - kept most criticisms above the belt but took a jab or two at the conceits of the carefully coifed former movie star who favors heeled boots and sports a perpetual tan.
"I don't know that he wears lifts - I know that's the rumor," Núñez said. "I don't even know that he wears makeup - I know that's the rumor. People say he spends all this money on haircuts. I don't know that that's true. I can get a guy to give him a haircut for 20 bucks a pop. He could save some money."
At the same time, Núñez said, "Mine is not an effort to undermine the governor in any way, shape or form."
