Sure! It's not like our troops are stretched thin or anything. I know quite a few that still get to sleep at night!

No offense, but doing what? Allowed to apprehend, shoot to kill, what? US/Mex border is long and difficult in places. Aliens aren't dissuaded by the presence of law enforcement. Without turning the border into a free-fire zone, there is little chance of stemming the flow with just troops.
How about stop issuing visas of any kind, put the visa waiver program on hold, fix the transit visa situation and not let anyone in for a while while we round up the ones who are here and send them packing. It would be reasonable to conclude that those who don't leave when told to are up to no good and don't have our best interests at heart. The problem is the government did nothing after 911 to stop these bastards from entering our country. Calling a halt to all in-migration would allow us to shift resources to the leaky spots along the border where illegal immigration occurs. We wouldn't catch all of them and stop all possibilities of terror, but we would make it easier to identify the terrorists who already are among us. We are spending billions of dollars on security in order to maintain open borders and accommodate THEIR desire to come HERE. This is self-defeating behavior. Of course we can't seal off the borders hermitically and eliminate all threats, but we could do a much better job than we're doing now for a lot less money. And please spare me the lecture about a free and open society. I live in Washington, D.C. and, as of yesterday, it has become, literally, a police state. For this we have our Islamic brethern to thank.
