Adding to the stew of protests planned during the Republican National Convention, New York labor leaders announced yesterday that they would hold a rally on Sept. 1 at which tens of thousands of union members would demonstrate against President Bush.
Labor leaders said the rally would be held near Madison Square Garden, the site of the convention scheduled from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2, to send a strong message to Republicans about what the labor officials said were Mr. Bush's antiworker and antiunion policies.
"George Bush is the working person's worst nightmare,'' said Brian M. McLaughlin, the president of the New York City Central Labor Council. "He has attempted to roll back labor laws and workers' rights as far as he can." _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
The rally, which has received a permit from the city, is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. at 30th Street and Eighth Avenue. Demonstrators will be asked to enter a planned security zone at 23rd Street. Mr. McLaughlin announced the rally at a news conference outside the Garden, where he was joined by leaders of more than a dozen unions, including 1199/SEIU, District Council 37, the United Federation of Teachers, the United Automobile Workers, the Transport Workers Union and Unite Here, the textile, hotel and restaurant workers union.

Mr. McLaughlin said that on the evening of Sept. 2, when Mr. Bush is expected to deliver his speech accepting the Republican Party's nomination, many New York union members would participate in a plan to have an estimated 25,000 union members across the nation knock on a million doors to spread an anti-Bush message.
Yeah, right. Each one will get to their first door, and then take a 3 hour coffee break. They'll be lucky if the 25,000 union members knock on 10 doors before quitting time.
I think the numbers are inflated, but, I also think republicans should be out countering their protest rally.
If you want to scatter the union people, ask them to change a lightbulb or something. They'll tell you it's not in their job description and shuffle off to something else.
Without management, there would be no companies either.
Without customers, there would be neither management or labor.
Labor and Management both should spend more time figuring out how to improve their product and less time trying to figure out who is or is not trying to screw them.
Join hands with your fellow men and women in the struggle to build a new world in the shell of the old.
I would, but according to my union that's osmeone else's job.
This sounds like socialist garbage, which has already killed a hundred million or so, so I pass. The idea of the unions is a great one, while you know as well as I do the majority of unions are merely another layer of management which the working man or woman has to pay another chunk of his paycheck to. The solution is collective bargaining for contracts, but placing more power in the hands of the individual through keeping more of the moeny he makes--i.e. lower taxes so one's own life choices are funded by his own earnings.
Well-meaning yuppie bohemians have never done a damned thing for the working man and never will.
"When people join a union, they do it because they want to get back a little more of what the boss steals from them every day, so they can improve their quality of life, in whatever small way possible"
Wrong...in the beginning, they join a union so they will be eligible to get a union job in their area. But I know I'm not going to change your mind. Get rid of all those "nasty" bosses...yes sir, and then see whose left to write your paycheck.
As a union member I'd have to say you're omitting a few facts. It takes everyone to make wealth. As I recall management works too. We are not supposed to be enemies but working toward a common goal of creating better lives for ourselves and our families. Union members should go to work with the idea of doing the best they can and making their firm as efficient and as profitble as possible. When that goal is reached, everyone benefits. That class-warfare crapola you spout went out with Marx. I'm sick and tired of union "leaders" whining about horrible conditions (that don't exist anymore) and attacking the system that has made everyone better off. Think about the security of your country first and yourself second please.
Yes comrade. Up the proletariat. Up yours.
Union folk are just people. So are the evil capitalists...like me! :)
Capitalism has brought better lives to more people than any other system. Socialism and communism--yes, yes, I know, they've never been done right--NO system has been done perfectly, and the value of any system lies in what it can achieve even in an imperfect state, because they will never reach a state of perfect operation--those evils have brought the world a hundred million or more dead. All the sentiments about "what if" don't change that.
In its present state the union system is dying in this country. I am not one of these "to heck with the unions" types, but there has to be something else. One reason for the demise of unions is something leftists refuse to acknowledge--that these "stupid" non-union workers are getting good lives without the unions.
They're also capable of being productive and well compensated without joining a union.
If they're running production, then they are management. It's possible to be both at the same time.
I am just talking down to your level. You are obviously a wannabe revolutionary. See ya at the barricades.
The customer, who buys the goods and services that the company produces, and ultimately pays everyone's salary.
If the company produces goods and services that people want to buy at prices they want to pay, and sell them for less than it costs to produce, the company will make money. The more the company makes, the better it can pay labor, management and shareholders. The focus of everyone involved should be on wealth creation, not on distribution.
