From The New York Times, http://www.nytimes.com/2004/04/09/nyregion/09CIRC.html?ei=5070&en=09781b555fa59470&ex=1091851200&adxnnl=1&adxnnlx=1091763191-KfOg+RhcGm/9qc+REXQu/w

Here's how to make the circus kosher for Passover:

Sell hot dogs without rolls and buy two brand-new cotton candy machines — uncontaminated by any leavened products — so thousands of observant Jewish children can have this circus treat.

Insist there be no female performers, including the Lycra-clad star aerialist and horse trainer Sylvia Zerbini, a k a the Circus Siren, since the most rigorously observant Jews require modest dress of women.

Hope that the New York Rangers don't make it into the hockey playoffs (not really a problem), so that Madison Square Garden would be available yesterday — the only day such a special performance could be held on this year's quirky Passover calendar.

That's how an Orthodox group in Brooklyn made it possible yesterday for 19,000 men, women and children to exult in the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus at the Garden, and fulfill the Torah commandment to be joyful on Passover.

It was Ringling Brothers' first kosher performance.

(excerpt)

Praying is a time of awe. If is not a time for frivolity. Of course, many people are unhappy when they pray (because they are praying for comfort), but in a regular Orthodox prayer service I think that you'd find most people being serious but not unhappy.

When did you see Orthodox Jews praying?

I saw them praying in New York one time and at a place in Los Angeles when they were dovoning I think that's how you spell that...

I realize that being serious in prayer is for comfort in fact I have to do it often )

I have been to many of worship services, I went to a Black church one time boy can they get into it, they got the spirit going all over the place, at first I was kind of shy but then after awhile I was clapping and getting the spirit of GOD too, Gospel Singers just have such powerful voices and somehow that can bring a spiritual type of feeling when praying to GOD...

I find it peaceful listening to harps and flutes in church..

You're right.

Gospel services can be uplifting and exhilarating. The Jewish way is quite solemn, except for Purim and Simchat Torah services, which are frivolous and celebratory, and wedding ceremonies, which are celebratory (and not frivolous).

It would have been fun to go to the circus, but I'm in Chicago. New York is the only place in America where such a thing could be done on a profitable basis.

I have a question for you...
Do you read all the political threads? Sometimes I get so sick and tired listening about the Kerry Threads and lately there is so much about the Democrats and Kerry
but I guess I am not all that politically saavy...

I vote for Bush and that's about it...

I read a lot of them, but it would be a full time job to read them all.

Also, a lot of the political threads are redundant or are angry vanity rantings.

I first heard about Free Republic when Opinion Journal (the Wall Street Journal's website) reported on the disintegration of the Space Shuttle and the way that it was tracked here on FR. The political threads are what kept me here. That, and the fact that any important news immediately gets posted here, with intelligent commentary. Since getting addicted to FR I rarely open a newspaper.

Interesting... I too found FR as a lurker in regards trying to find out about conservative web-sites..Your right FR gets all the first headline news...

First thing in the morning have coffee and click on FR for the news....
I do alot of posting mainly on religious topics as you have noticed and many on the explosion of the Homosexual Agenda.

I posted an article today about a Pastor in Sweeden who has been Jailed about quoting Homosexuality as a Sin from the Bible. Biblical Passages now can be considered a Hate Crime? in Sweeden what's next?

There is a difference between open missionary work and deceptive activities aimed at minors.

As for refuting Christianity, it is easy to do. I just don't like to undermine Christianity. It is rude.
I would expect receprocity.

Why do you think a subscriber in replacement theology posted this here, if not to create strife?

Missyme,
Try to be objective for one moment. As a Jew, I consider Jesus to have been a false prohpet.
How would you feel if Muslims where perfidiously proselytising Christian youth through false pretenses? Would not an apologist for this say that Mohammed was beyond reproach and that they seek only to complete the Christianity of the youth?

All Jews await the Messiah.
The term "Messianic" is misleading.

Indifferent to the pain of the Jewish people? Are Christian missionaries in Africa and other parts of the world indifferent to their pain? I think they are sensitive to their pain, and the pain of the Palestinians. That is why they offer them both salvation through Jesus Christ. AMEN and peace be upon both peoples!!!
Are you so charitable to missionaries of other faiths in America? Have you brought Muslim or LDS missionaries to your Church?

didn't think Christian missionaries were engaging in "illegal" activity. After all, part of our religion IS to convert Jews, so why the heck shouldn't be more focused on converting Jews? We send them tons of aid, and this is how they repay us? By discriminating against Christians. If this story took place in any other nation it would be called persecution of Christians. Jews can make up their own minds and shouldn't have to live under Rabbinical law. Muslims are living in hell on earth because they aren't free to worship as they please.
1. I have nothing against adults converting. The issue here is underhanded and perfidious targetting of children.
2. The point of Israel is to have a nation for Israelites. It was not for us to sell our souls.
3. All missionary activity is discouraged, including Jewish missionary activity.

Why is Christ specified as being a reason to deny the law of return? Can Jewish atheists and Buddhists come?
You give up your Judaism, you stop being a Jew. There is no right of return for Jews who left the faith. However, Christians of Jewish descent do move to Israel if their purpose is to become Jewish.

Is it not true that the weird globalist B'hia (or whatever) faith is centered in Israel?
Bahai is Persian in origin, but there is a Bahai temple in Israel.

And why, pray tell, would Jewish parents disown children for following another faith? Yes, I have heard that, and I know two Jews who have had this occur in their families. The Jews disowned them, causing THEM pain. Why not have sympathy for them too instead of focusing on the pain of a religious Jew whose child becomes a follow of Christ?
A Jew who coverts to another faith has turned his back not only on God and God's laws, but on his family and people. It is existential treason.

Judaism is particularist. Christianity is universal. Until you learn about Judaism, none of this will make sense.

This was forced on Jerusalem by secularist courts.

This isn't hypocracy, but a sign of the culture war in Israel. You just happen to be on the side of the Sodomites.

Actually, I do not believe that breaking the laws of Kashrut is a toevah. That word is reserved for homosexuality, idoitary, incest, bestiality, and other heinous sins.

Actually, even some Ashkenazi Jews have started to wear the "hand" on a necklace to ward her off.
