The rabbit, which may have been fleeing a predator, swam toward his boat, "hissing menacingly, its teeth flashing and nostrils flared." President Carter was forced to swat at the vicious beast with a canoe paddle, which apparently scared it off.

I never realized the rabbit that attached Jimma might not have been a rabbit (no photos, no real good eyewitness except the Prez).
I have been in those same waters and several - at least 15 - times I have been approached by a muskrat or a beaver. They usually come right up to the boat but flare at the last second. The muskrats will go after your stringer of fish. Maybe once one beaver actually thumped the boat with his tail. Now many times they would stay 20 feet away and slap slap slap - not good for fishing.
The first time I thought it was rabid but the third fourth time I figured it might have been a female protecting young.
But even then I never thought of whacking it or even shooting it (I'm sure I at least had a 22 pistol at least once). I mean its not like the damn thing is going to be able to get in the boat. Some things you have to just let go by. Sept maybe a moccasin.
