After reading the article on being a Democrat in Orange County, it was clear to me that Americans suffer from the malady of perception over reality ["United for opportunity," Front Page, July 25]. But where to begin? How about core beliefs and policies?
First, as a Republican, I believe the U.S. Constitution has made us the greatest nation the world has ever known. Unlike the Democrats, I do not believe the Constitution is a "living document." Republicans want judges who interpret the Constitution. Democrats want judges who change it. A liberal judiciary is the greatest threat to our Constitution.
Abortion "rights" are the law of the land, and I respect the law. However, the word "privacy" is the core of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling. This word is not actually in the Constitution, but resulted from liberal judicial rulings. Does this perceived "right" include the wholesale murder of viable fetuses? Do mainstream Democrats think that partial birth abortion, a hideous procedure, qualifies as a right?
On the subject of economic policy, as a Republican I believe government should help those who can't help themselves, not help those who won't help themselves. Americans are free to succeed or to fail. Exactly where the government comes into that equation is a matter of opinion.
That is, again, why I rely on the Constitution. It says we have the right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." It does not say we have the right to redistribute one citizen's property because another citizen makes the wrong life choices.
I am not rich, so how can I be a Republican? It's very simple, I'm free to make my choices and live with them, good or bad. My wife and I both worked entry level jobs in our late teens and never graduated college, by our choice. Based on the silly assumptions made in your story, how can we possibly be Republicans?
