What makes me a little nervous about this is that in 1968 Hubert Humphrey BARELY lost to Richard Nixon. Had it not been for George Wallace, Humphrey would have won.

Actually, Wallace took a ton of votes from Nixon in 1968. Wallace carried pretty much the same few states Goldwater carried in 1964 (not exactly, but close). Without Wallace, Nixon would have won 55-45. It's hard to imagine Wallace voters supporting Humphrey.
