In fact, nothing about this "church" is traditional. The guidelines that regulate the Roman Catholic liturgy are contained in the General Instructions of the Roman Missal. One such example would be:
The Altar Cross: The revised General Instruction speaks always of "a cross with the figure of Christ crucified upon it" (GIRM 308, 122). This cross, "positioned either on the altar or near it," should be visible not only during the liturgy, but at all times, recalling "for the faithful the saving passion of the Lord, [and] remain[ing] near the altar even outside of liturgical celebrations" (GIRM 308).
Here is "The Altar Cross" at The Paulist Center, their interpretation of Christ's "saving passion". Anyone who has seen Mel Gibson's film The Passion of the Christ, will understand the GIRM's meaning. This is an atrocity.
Catholic Ping - let me know if you want on/off this list
Obviously not a Crucifix. We have been calling them Resuretrifix.
When we complained about one at a neighboring parish, the Priest bought a little Crucifix to put on the Altar.
Please add me to your Catholic ping list. Thanks. :-)
Is this photo of the new-age looking cross or what-it-is from the Paulist Center? This is disgraceful!
