Loved Ones Asked To Donate To Democratic Cause
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- A South Florida woman who died this week had an unusual last request. Instead of flower or contributions in her name to a charity, she asked those who loved her to try to make sure President George W. Bush is not re-elected.
Loved ones said that Joan Abbey was committed to her political passions, even in death.
Abbey was born in Montreal, but lived for many years in Miami Beach and Aventura. Family and friends came from as far away as Canada and California to remember Abbey at the Mount Nebo Jewish Cemetery in Miami.
Abbey, who was a lifelong Democrat, died Monday -- coincidentally on the first day of the Democratic National Convention.
Her sister, Tillie Shapiro, said, "She was just a caring person She cared about people, and people who were disadvantaged."
Abbey was buried the day after the Democratic convention ended. Her unusual death notice in the Miami Herald said: "You can honor Joan's values by voting against George Bush and contributing to a liberal or Democratic cause."
Abbey's nephew, Martin Shapiro, said, "What she cared most about was improving circumstances in this country... getting rid of George Bush and making this a better country for all people."
Coincidentally, the presiding rabbi, Brett Goldstein, is a registered Democrat but is voting for Bush, and he questioned the timing of Abbey's message at such a sensitive time.
"My contention is that if there's any situation that's sacrosanct, it should be devoid of political ramifications," Goldstein said. "Although people have the opportunity and they can do it if they want to, it is not really appropriate at this time."
Shapiro said, "It was her (Abbey's) essence. It was her core value to try to see this country become a better place and become a more just society. And I think that was the last word she'd want to leave."
Abbey did not want her age known. Many friends said she remained forever young in spirit and staunchly committed to her beliefs.
I heard about this woman, she was very well known in the area, but what the press article didn't say was that she suffered from a very rare mental desease called "oppositis dementia"
In short, whatever she said, she meant the opposite, if she was asked "What do you think of Republicans", she would answer "I hate them with every fiber of my being" Her family and friends were used to it, they knew what she meant.
She left everything to the democrat party.
You have no idea how close you are to the truth.
The south florida democrat clubs have fanned out anabsentee register the HUGE number of assited living facility elderly.
(I would imagine those in hospice and near death are included)
They have also targeted homeless shelters.
Florida years ago signed a consent agreement with the Justice Department giving the Justice department the power to examine voting in FL. Where is the Justice Department task force?
This is not the only type of dying are against Bush. I suspect we will have more of these sympathy symbolism stories.
Anxiety and stress have been known to kill people.
As well, since you brought up God, look thru the O.T. and you'll see examples that follow my suggestion.
If it were her dying with that GWB be re-elected there would be no published article to discuss.
Did she leave all of her assets to the needy?
These older voters still live under the delusion of the party of the dixiecrats or the 1900's. They have no clue as to the fact the communists and homosexuals have taken over the democrat party.
Canada has the bad habit of exporting all of the nuts to the U.S.A. where they continue to spew their venom on our country.
I read the article three times, but I couldn't find a cause of death. My guess: acute bitterness, lung cancer from cigartette smoking, or a combination of both.
I got on the elevator one morning in 1998 when Senator John Glenn was "returning to space" on the space shuttle. Our VP and another gentleman got on the same elevator as the doors were shutting, and were discussing the John Glenn situation. I suppose they caught the annoyed look on my face, and the VP asked, "So, what do you think about Mr. Glenn going into orbit"? "Suits me fine", I answered, "one less damn Democrat on planet earth for the election". My girlfriend, who I married a few years later, spat her coffee back into her coffee cup.
I feel the same way about this broad. I just hope she hasn't voted absentee yet.
Pretty lame dieing wish.
Joan, President Bush is going to protect your descendants whether you like it or not.
She may not have even been a us citizen eligible to vote.
(though I would look to see if her absentee ballot gets mailed)
From the article she was jewish, Ed Kotch has said and is campaigning to vote for Bush. Israel must not be a liberal or a democrat cause.
By all means - that's what the 'Net is for, right?
I think we're on the receiving end there.
"Journalism doesn't get much more stupid than this."
You'd be surprised.
"Brett Goldstein, is a registered Democrat but is voting for Bush"
Are these the "Bush Democrats"?
RIP to a sad life...if that's what her life came down to.
One less rabid Democrat in the voting pool.
I prefer the story of the lady who died the other day. She voted for Bush by absentee ballot and wanted a Bush-Cheney '04 bumper sticker on her casket. It was done.
I suspect that the "lady" in the posted story just might be having a serious conversation with St. Peter, OUTSIDE the pearly gates.
Sad, isn't it? Don't Jews realize that Michael Moore and his kind despise the freedom that the Jews have gained in Israel?
