I do keep hearing about this. The entire Islamic/muslim world believe this. I wasn't personally there, so I just don't know about it.
I don't understand why people are particularly sceptical about the 6,000,000 figure.
In the context of 20th Century genocides, that number doesn't even stand out!
Consider the 10s of millions liquidated by Stalin and Mao, the million upon millions in Africa, the millions in SE Asia.

Some 12 million people died in the Nazi death camps. We know, because the National Socialists, being among the more obsessive-compulsive of people, kept accurate records. Which they could not bring themselves to destroy even as ultimate defeat loomed.
Of the 12 million, approximately half, 6 million, were classified as "Jewish". There is no reason to doubt the figures compiled by the National Socialists were highly accurate.
Unlike the International Socialists, the Communists, who usurped government in the old Imperial Russia and converted it into a totalitarian police state, with secret police and huge concentration camps, fifteen years before the rise of Nazi Germany. Given that first Lenin, then Stalin, had a lot more time to exercise their magic in converting a backward agrian society into a backward industrial society, the number of persons executed at the end of some dark road in the middle of the night, or left to starve as beggars, or allowed to freeze to death in a lonely gulag above the Arctic Circle, or simply shot through the back of the skull and tumbled into a mass grave in the heat of the afternoon is estimated to be more than 20 million, with the number of Jewish persons probably about 12 million or so, roughly twice the number of Jews that were executed by the very worst that Adolf could do.
For you see, there were TWO Holocausts, one well documented, the other shadowy and protected from scrutiny for decades. And both done by regimes that included the term "Socialist" in their adopted designations.
Of course, Egypt has a rather well-developed form of its own "nationalist socialism", and there is a built-in bias to cover up the anti-Semitic activities within their own country. It probably doesn't help that a very prosperous Jewish-founded country is right next door. One that has kick the Egyptians' collective butt several times in military confrontations.
