Democrats meeting in Boston this week are promising to support coal as a key domestic fuel for power generation and say the party would move beyond OPEC by diversifying sources of oil used in the United States. The party also calls for investing billions of dollars in technologies to generate electricity with less pollution. We believe coal must continue its important role in a new energy economy, while achieving high environmental standards, the 2004 Democratic National Platform Committee report says. In addition, the platform would invest in hydrogen technologies.
It supports mandatory, enforceable reliability standards and creation of public-private partnerships to spur more generation that is environmentally friendly.

This stinks to high heaven.
Burning coal = Acid rain. I have to add Potash to my pool to raise the ph every time it rains. I live along the Jersey (ZooJersey) coast and get dumped on from all the coal burning powerplants to the West.
"move beyond OPEC by diversifying sources of oil used in the United States."
It would be great if they would support drilling for oil in this country.
Exactly! How can they be for the "common man" when they are currently trying to put him out of business and take away his source of income.
55% of all generation from coal...and only a handful of permits are being written to replace old coal units. Don't be suckered in by this one folks. The rats are playing games with people's lives.
They talk the talk, but when it came time to walk the walk, the liberals sucessfully stopped a coal generation plant here in York, PA.
I thought it was bad being the "Pepsi Generation". But the "Coal Generation", that's really gotta suck! Bummer.
Now we just need a good coal-burning internal combustion engine.
If we did not have coal generation, half the lights in this country would go out, immediately. Saying you are in favor of coal generation is like saying you are in favor of the Mississippi River running to the sea. It's going to be there whether you are in favor of it or not.
But it is interesting how the DNC can conveniently forget all about Acid Rain and Global Warming when they need to pander to a few votes in coal country. Not that they had any serious plans for curbing Acid Rain or Global Warming either...
But one thing, they go on and on about developing hydrogen technology. Hydrogen is a storage medium, not an energy source. If you are going to burn hydrogen, you need to generate the energy to generate the hydrogen from somewhere, like burning coal, for instance. Hydrogen technology is the perfect metaphor for the Democrat Party, IMHO. It is clean and slick and produces nothing on it's own.

They have plans to curb Acid Rain and Global Warming. Just in other countries. Only thing is we will pay for China's
pollution. Gotta love Kyoto.
I thought the RATS spens the last 4 years bashing coal as an energy source. LOL
Coal. I remember something about coal and the Toon admin. And the Riadys, maybe. Something about someone, thanks to the Toon admin, having a lock on the supply of anthracite (I think) coal. That ring a bell with anyone?
Did a search. This is interesting.

And here's an oldie-but-a-goodie thread from 1997.
I think this bears some looking into :)
Well what do ya know, the Dems and I agree. Except I mean it.
I guess this will create the millions of jobs F'ing kerry is talking about. Building the new power plants and coal miners will be the next big economic boost.
Have the RATs ever thought of the pollution coal plants produce? The EV whackos will never stand for coal fired plants or strip mining. Guess the next thing they will ask for is horse and buggies again. One step backward every time they open their traps.
Tough, why don't you turn off your electricity and move into a cave?
Easy explanation: Union jobs
