Deep Throat suspect found dead in hotel
The Guardian [UK] ^ | July 29, 2004 | by Dan Glaister in Los Angeles

One of the longest-running mysteries of American politics may soon be resolved after it was announced yesterday that the man many suspect of being Deep Throat in the Watergate scandal had died.

Fred LaRue, known as the "bagman" because he delivered payments to ensure the silence of participants in the Watergate break-in, was found dead in a hotel room in Biloxi, Mississippi. He was 75.

The two Washington Post reporters who broke the Watergate story, Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, have maintained that they would only reveal the identity of Deep Throat once he was dead.

Although there have been several names advanced as Deep Throat, LaRue is one of the more likely candidates. He was a special assistant to John Mitchell, the former attorney general who headed Creep, the Campaign to Re-elect the President, in 1972.

LaRue was at a meeting at Nixon's Florida holiday home at which the scheme to break into the Democratic headquarters in the Watergate building in Washington was first mooted.

Although LaRue insisted he was not Deep Throat, and that the source was a combination of several people, Woodward and Bernstein have insisted Deep Throat was one person.

LaRue said last year that President Nixon had not been told of the plan to break into the building.

He cited his close relationship with Mr Mitchell to back up his claim that the president was ignorant of the plan.

LaRue served four and a half months in prison for his role in the Watergate conspiracy, after being charged with obstructing justice.

I have heard Haig, Ehrlichman, Colson...only the shadow knows.
I hope they don't take it to the grave tho. I suppose with this guys death, his memoirs will be posted and we will be able to exclude him from the list. Maybe he will reveal the identity of deep throat.

"Although LaRue insisted he was not Deep Throat,"

he will be now, since he can no longer deny it-- and WoodStein are off the hook of one of the biggest frauds in journalistic history--

I remember watching the Watergate hearings all that summer they were on. It was the equivalent of the OJ hearings of that day. Everybody watched them. The media had the country convinced that this was the greatest threat to American freedom since Benedict Arnold. Now we know the uproar about Watergate was a Democratic coup to overthrow Nixon. Oh well!

I work with a lot of hotels in SoFla, last year, one of my Ft. Lauderdale managers told me that his housekeeper had found a dead man in one of their rooms. Apparently, the man came in, booked a room for three nights, and died in his sleep sometime after checking in.

He did not check out when he was supposed to, but he had a credit card on file, so the Front Desk figured they didn't have to worry about the extra days. The Executive Housekeeper decided to ignore the "Do Not Disturb" sign after five days, and opened the door to find him dead in his bed; the A/C was set in the sixties, and the room was like a meat locker, so there was very little decomposition, if any.

Here's where it gets weird, the hotel manager went ahead and charged the additional days stay to the dead guy's credit card.

There is an interesting book on Amazon about the Watergate, Nixon, Kissinger and Rockefeller. It's title is 'The Watergate Amendment. In the book deep throat is revealed and a lot of other stuff a good read.

Fell backwards accidentally on to a very long, sharp knife. A welcome diversion for Kerry and a revival of Bernstein's career.

I thought they meant Monica.

You mean Stubby's girlfriend Monica? According to her description of 42 --- there would be no reason for her to have a deep throat.

I worked at the front desk of a Holiday Inn back in my 20's. One night a very ordinary looking middle age woman checked in. I DIDN'T check her drivers license as she looked and acted so darn normal and forgettable. The next day there was a search for a missing woman in our town. The cops went to all the hotels, as this woman had left a suicide note at her home for her family to find. We checked our guests check in registrations, and we didn't have anyone with that particular name. Then they described the woman and said she probably checked in under a false name. I remembered the woman, called her room...no answer. Gave police the key........ well, you know the rest. Not a day I like to remember.
